Job Requirements The MNN El Barrio Firehouse seeks a dynamic and experienced person to manage its Youth Media Education programs and to participate in strategic and future planning. The candidate must be knowledgeable about education theory and practice, how young people consume and produce media, and current broadcasting and distribution platforms. S/he must have at least three years experience as an educator working directly with young people and at least two years in field and/or television studio production.

The Youth Media Education Specialist will report directly to the Firehouse Director. The application deadline is August 16, 2013 with an anticipated September start date.

Overall Responsibilities

The Youth Media Education Specialist will be primarily responsible for the planning and development of programs for youth up to 21 years old. S/he will administer programs, teach core classes, and stay informed about educational trends and innovation as well as liaison with other media educators. Specific duties include:

Educational
• Participate in strategic planning toward development of a comprehensive youth media education program.
• Coordinate creation of programs, curriculums and student materials, and ensure they are regularly updated.
• Develop and implement best strategies and practices for curriculum implementation, assessment and evaluation.
• Research media arts curricula used in schools and other youth media organizations; develop relationships and liaison with other media educators and institutions.
• Coordinate delivery of instruction to Youth Media Center students to include all aspects of becoming a producer from concept to production.
• Plan and implement calendar of programs, workshops and special events.
• Prepare class and workshop summaries and reports to evaluate and continuously improve programs.
• Assist in orientation of students to Youth Media Center.

Production
• Teach core workshops in media and production, field and/or studio production.
• Assist participants with setting timelines to achieve producer certification.
• Participate in production shoots, as needed.
• Arrange with media professionals to teach workshops on advanced, technical and professional development topics.

Administrative
• Develop and coordinate application procedures for youth programs and internships.
• Conduct initial interview, coordinate enrollment, class rosters and waiting lists.
• Prepare class logistics including reserving rooms and studios, and preparing handouts.
• Communicate confirmations, cancellations, notes, or other class updates.
• Collect and compile evaluations by participants and instructors toward ongoing assessment.
• Maintain database and prepare monthly reports.
• Assist with general upkeep and cleanliness of classrooms, studios, and equipment.
• Other duties as may be required.

Required Education and Experience
• Knowledgeable about education theory and practice, how young people consume and produce media, and current broadcasting and distribution multi-media platforms and workflow.
• Minimum three (3) years teaching courses in film/video and/or television/studio production.
• Bachelors’ degree in media, video, film or equivalent experience.
• Experience in designing student-centered media curriculum.
• Two (2) years direct field or studio production experience.
• Skilled in coordinating and producing concepts from beginning to end in multi-media platforms.
• Basic knowledge of evaluation and assessment principles.
• Demonstrated ability to direct, train and coordinate the work of others.
• Excellent proficiency with Mac computer and Final Cut Pro required.
• Minimum experience operating informational databases.
• Experience teaching high school and college students.
• Masters’ degree preferred.

• Demonstrated problem solving skills, capacity to troubleshoot independently and make recommendations.
• Ability to maintain accurate records.
• Experience in conflict resolution.
• Available to work evening and weekend hours.
