The National Affairs Correspondent is a seasoned, independent-minded journalist with a strong point of view who embraces the opportunity to create daily stories that range from immersive investigations and multimedia pieces to aggregated, short posts to commentary and analysis, across platforms.
S/he is energetic, passionate about things that matter and mature enough to dispel those that don't. S/he is a true collaborator and team player who will contribute ideas, experience and hands on labor to the overall success of Fusion.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
You will produce reported stories, opinion columns, and curated posts which provide insight and context to notions of leadership, justice & equality, culture, modern life, and the American Dream as present in stories about politics, social mobility, race, identity and multiculturalism. Also within the beat, you'll keep an eye out for resonant stories about technology, food, media, pop culture & celebrity, immigration, entrepreneurship and more.
A key challenge for the National Affairs Correspondent is making sense of the news, data (reports and studies), big topics and trending issues, and presenting them to Fusion's audience in an entertaining, straightforward, non-BS way. And with a strong point of view, with your unique voice that stands apart from the noise. You will collaborate closely with the National Affairs Correspondent (West Coast) and other members of the Features/Futures team that will be engaging into the national conversation.
In addition to daily production, you are responsible for conceptualizing and developing long-term original feature sets, series, and special projects regardless of platform. We value dramatic ideas and disruptive thinking and we want our colleagues to seize opportunities.
Source and expertise development: You are responsible for building a base of sources necessary for quick-turn news stories and enterprise features for multiplatform publishing. In addition to subject expertise in key topics, the National Affairs Correspondent needs to be a generalist, flexible enough to collaborate on coverage and reporting for a wide range of subjects and opportunities.
Web site production: The National Affairs Correspondent is simultaneously a blogger, writer, and multimedia journalist, producing original content in multiple formats. Full grasp of SEO, analytics and web publishing best practices is required.
Broadcast production: Shoot DV and edit stories, as well as work with broadcast producers in news-gathering and turning web stories into broadcast; creation of explainer videos. Live on-air expert commentaries at moment's notice.
DESIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- You are an organized self-starter with proven experience self-publishing, and publishing on a digital platform across news, entertainment and lifestyle.
- You're a strategic thinker with assured judgment and decision making, and strong communication and interpersonal skills to represent Fusion wherever you might be.
- You have an absolute passion for the promise of journalism in the digital age, as well as a deep understanding of technologies and trends shaping digital media's future.
- You have a track record for developing audiences across various platforms and social networks.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to wear many hats. We're a start-up; it's all hands on deck, with many decks.
- 4-year Bachelor's degree required
- Minimum of five years experience writing news journalism for digital media, including content published in mobile environments
- Able to use and manipulate analytics tools (e.g., Omniture, Comscore, Chartbeat, Social Flow, Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, Twitter Counter, etc.) and behavioral research to drive greater understanding of content engagement
- Can balance priorities, multiple projects, and tasks
- Creative, dynamic idea-generator who can pitch unique concepts for the benefit of a multi-platform, news media enterprise
- Bilingual (Spanish-English) a plus
