Job Requirements Science Friday seeks a web producer who is passionate about great science storytelling to join our small staff. We’re looking for a creative and organized self-starter with a wonderful sense of humor who works well in a team. Qualified candidates must have the following:

-A degree in journalism and, preferably, another degree in the sciences
-3-5 years of professional journalism experience
-Experience with HTML and other aspects of online publishing (via a CMS)
-Familiarity with app development and mobile publishing
-Familiarity with Photoshop or other photo-manipulating tool
-Familiarity with SEO best practices, social media sharing, and online analytics reporting

Duties:
Website Strategy
• Work with managing editor and other Science Friday staff to continue honing the editorial vision and strategic plans for the Science Friday website and mobile platforms

Web Production
• Serve as liaison between Science Friday and its site developer
• With managing editor, review site and plan updates
• Track the status of bug fixes and new features and confer with managing editor on expenditures
• Test new web features to make sure they function properly
• Develop CMS manual and teach other staff members how to use the system
• Stay on top of industry developments
• Use site analytics to help inform programming decisions
• Regularly refresh homepage content and update/fix links
• Update other aspects of ScienceFriday.com and SciFri.org upon request (e.g., posting job openings or changes to the “about page”)

Editorial Production and Radio Assistance
• Assist managing editor in assigning and editing articles for the website
• Assist managing editor in recruiting freelancers for the website
• Assist managing editor in making recommendations for web content partners
• Pitch and write articles for the website
• Contribute to fact-checking efforts
• Assist managing editor in copy-editing articles before publication
• Assist managing editor in publishing articles
• Assist managing editor in creating and executing web campaigns such as photo contests
• Collaborate with radio production staff to generate web articles that complement show content
• Research photos for segment pages and review program before publication
• Assist managing editor in proofreading copy for radio segment pages

Traffic
• Monitor site traffic on a weekly-to-monthly basis and prepare reports upon request
• Monitor podcast and video downloads on a monthly basis and prepare reports upon request (e.g., for grant and marketing reports)

Social Media
• Contribute to SciFri’s social media efforts and strategy
• Provide managing editor with suggestions on new social media strategies based on analytics reporting
