As a member of a small production team in the Publishing department of the American Library Association (ALA), you will help produce 75+ books per year and affiliated marketing collateral while adhering to ALA’s high editorial, design, and production standards.
Previous book design experience and understanding of book layout considerations is preferred. Superior typography skills needed, as well as an ability to visually interpret subtle nuances of editorial content, both in complicated book interiors, and more generally in book covers.
This position requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, as well as strong well rounded production skills; as the position also entails designing marketing collateral, (catalogs, posters, bookmarks, etc.), web graphic, and HTML emails, as well as posting content to websites and sending press-ready files to printers.
The ability to juggle many diverse projects amid shifting priorities and tight schedules is essential. The successful candidate will enjoy a wide array of rewarding work in a publishing environment where learning and improvement are encouraged, and adoption of new technologies and best practices is a priority.

Requirements: A minimum of five years design experience and a Bachelor’s degree. Strong portfolio of graphic design and page layout. Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and ability to follow style guides (we use The Chicago Manual of Style). Proficiency with InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator in a Windows environment. Working knowledge of XML, HTML, CSS, Dreamweaver, Flash, and PHP are pluses |
