Job Requirements •Bachelor’s degree required.
•A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in media relations and campaign communications, preferably with public policy or nonprofit advocacy organizations.
•Significant experience in earned media and considerable familiarity with paid media.
•Understanding of media operations and news organizations and experience pitching both event-based press materials (announcements, bills, agreements, etc.) and product-based press materials (statements, reports, polls, etc.).
•Experience creating and maintaining media lists.
•Demonstrated track record of letter to the editor and op-ed placement in print media.
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
•Ability to work well in a team and independently.
•Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure.
•Good project management skills and attention to detail.
•Demonstrated political skills and judgment.
•Ability to thrive in a creative, fast-paced and highly professional corporate culture that emphasizes excellence, collegiality and teamwork.

Travel
Occasional travel to attend meetings and conferences.

About Our Company Communications
The Communications department supports leaders at all levels of the institution to promote project and campaign efforts, inform key audiences, and protect and advance the Pew brand. The department provides a comprehensive range of communications services for all programmatic and administrative units and Trusts-operated projects. Our in-house expertise includes: strategy and message development; editorial support; design and creative services; media event planning; digital and video production and social media. The unit oversees all communications policies, guidelines and processes in order to manage the Pew brand, ensure production of the highest quality work and effectively steward Pew’s resources.


Position Overview
This position, based in Pew’s Washington, D.C., office, reports to the Director, Communications, and is a member of the Pew communications staff supporting the work of the public safety performance project in the government performance division. He/she implements communications strategies for the project to effectively communicate Pew’s work and messages. The Senior Associate, Communications works on the public safety performance project, which works with states to advance data-driven, fiscally sound policies and practices in the criminal and juvenile justice systems that protect public safety, hold offenders accountable, and control corrections costs. The successful candidate must have excellent writing and editing skills, be creative, think strategically and have proven media relations skills. Experience in state policy and advocacy communications is required.
