Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing or Journalism required, MA preferred
At least 8-10 years of experience in publishing, at least 3-5 as a business manager
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
Organized self-starter
Must have solid grasp and understanding of financial aspects to running a business and familiarity with managing to a P&L
Experience with a publisher that has digital aspects a plus
About Our Company
The Magazine Business Manager will have financial oversight of the magazine operations while partnering with the Publisher on the strategic vision. The successful incumbent will work closely with the Publisher, Marketing, and other departments to ensure the magazine achieves its financial targets and strategic goals. Additionally, the business manager will be responsible for:
Budgeting & Forecasting – develops budget and monitors all budget assumptions, oversees monthly close and quarterly financial reviews, works with AP/Publisher to provide forecasts
Strategic Planning – work with management team to identify and prioritize opportunities to develop the business and extend the brand. Research and assess profit potential of prospective ideas.
Advertising Pricing – Establish pricing guidelines for sales staff. Handle all pricing request, including all special unit/insert request. Work with Alok to develop special promotional programs, evaluate financial implications by working with production, and price for optimal margin achievement.
Production Layout and design – Work with TMG/Production/Portland to evaluate book size an overall layout to ensure the magazine is produced most efficiently.
Circulation and rate base evaluation – Coordinate research and financial analysis to determine the most appropriate circulation base for adver
