Job Title: News Content Producer, Homepage
Location: Boston, MA
Job Description: Boston.com is looking for a homepage/news producer. The ideal candidate will have previous news experience, love working on breaking stories, and possess excellent headline writing and copy editing skills. The candidate should also have previous website experience and strong technical skills. Knowledge of HTML, Photoshop, and experience using a content management system is required. This position involves weekend work.
The producer will be responsible for updating the site’s homepage with breaking news and features while working closely with the Boston.com news editor. The producer will also package related links, photos, and videos in stories, and create original online content such as photo galleries and Web pages for special reports. This is not a reporting position.
Responsibilities:
- Update the Boston.com homepage by slotting links to stories, writing headlines and teases, and cropping photos
- Communicate with editors and reporters on breaking news stories
- Monitor wires and competitors’ websites
- Build photo galleries and update news sections
- Slot related links, photos, graphics, and videos in stories
- Build polls and message boards to foster discussions on the site
- Monitor site traffic and ensure the most important content is accessible to readers
Qualifications:
- Prior online journalism experience
- Experience with publishing content online and familiarity with a CMS
- Familiarity with a variety of Web tools, including knowledge of basic HTML and Photoshop
- Ability to write and create compelling story packages. Published writing samples, including personal blogs, will be evaluated
- Understanding of SEO concepts
- Ability to confidently make editorial judgments
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work within a close-knit editorial team
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent
- Ability to identify cross-promotional opportunities within Boston.com to maximize page views and content quality
