The development and new business associate will manage and grow advertising income, manage and build circulation, research and implement digital revenue programs, work with ED and other staff to generate ideas for potential projects, and participate or lead in planning and proposal development for current ideas.
Media
Advertising, Sponsorships and Underwriting
• Plan and execute strategy to increase advertising/sponsorship revenue from print magazine, e-newsletter, and other digital media.
• Identify potential advertisers and sponsors.
• Manage existing and new sponsor relationships.
• Traffic all advertising.
Circulation
• Review current print circulation model.
• Help develop and execute print circulation growth plan.
• Help develop and execute digital circulation growth plan.
• Plan, execute, and report on magazine subscription promotions, renewal and billing sources, including online, direct mail, insert cards, and digital promotions.
Communications/Public Relations
• Work closely with the ED and staff to develop communications strategies and messaging.
• Collaborate regularly with NHI partner and associate organizations, and funders.
• Implement and coordinate in-house development of external communication materials, including annual report, press releases, and routine and specialized communications for press, funders and prospects.
• Help develop opportunities for media coverage to increase visibility of NHI/Shelterforce.
Editorial Services
NHI/Shelterforce is unique in the community development field. We combine the ability to write and edit accessible stories with a deep understanding of the community development world. NHI/Shelterforce provides editorial services to foundations and others wishing to describe their projects or programs in an easy to read way that is meaningful to the field. We clarify complexity and provide engaging narrative that can lead to program innovations or policy changes. The development and new business associate will:
• Work with the ED and editor to identify potential clients and stories that need telling.
• Plan and execute a marketing and outreach strategy.
• Write marketing materials.
• Write proposals.
• Manage new client relationships, billing, and reporting.
Marketing and Promotion
• Manage NHI/Shelterforce engagement on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media platforms
• Design and execute a regular routine/system for promoting Shelterforce issues.
• Help develop and implement strategies for maximizing the use of technology and electronic media for communications, public relations, marketing and fund development.
• Draft, edit and send press releases.
• Develop and maintain a public relations database.
• Build and maintain relationships with media/reporters.
• Manage relationships with industry conferences and organizations (increasing/improving the reach of NHI/Shelterforce’s content and influence)
• Represent NHI/Shelterforce at events as needed.
• Respond to media inquiries.
Fundraising
• Work with ED to build and maintain relationships with funders and other supporters.
• Coordinate this process with earned income efforts.
• Identify and pursue new foundation, corporate, individual and government funding sources.
• Develop new fundraising strategies.
• Manage fundraising calendar: Draft and edit all proposals, letters of inquiries, and grant reports, guaranteeing all deadlines are met.
Requirements

• Familiar with social justice issues.
• Have unquestionable integrity and highest ethical standards.
• Entrepreneurial, fast-paced, resourceful, energetic, and a self-starter.
• Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, publishing, or related field.
• Experience in communications and fundraising, publishing, media or advertising (print and digital).
• Strong Macintosh computer skills including competence in the use of spreadsheets, databases, CMS and social media platforms.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Software (PowerPoint, Excel, Word).
• Experience with InDesign, Salesforce, and Constant Contact (or similar service) a plus.
• Experience developing a variety of written marketing and communications materials.
• Experience maintaining and expanding a social media presence.
• Experience with budgeting and forecasting.
• Ability to juggle multiple projects with great attention to detail, competence and good humor.
• Positivity, tenacity, and “grace under pressure.”
• Ability to develop and foster a stellar rapport with current and potential colleagues, clients, partners and funders, and maintain relationships over time with individuals and organizations.

| About Our Company |
The National Housing Institute/Shelterforce is looking for a dynamic individual to help increase revenue, both grants and earned, and increase awareness of NHI/Shelterforce and our work. The development and new business associate will be responsible for fundraising and increasing earned income from editorial services, advertising and circulation revenue from print and digital platforms, and new media-related projects such as e-books, apps, webinars, and podcasts. The associate will manage both online and print circulation. The associate will also play an integral role in developing and executing marketing strategies targeting digital, event, and print advertisers. The position will report to the executive director.
NHI/Shelterforce is a small, progressive, independent nonprofit communications and education organization driven by a belief in the ability of all communities to be healthy and thriving. NHI supports community revitalization to empowering residents of low-income neighborhoods by strengthening the work of community builders through public policy and programmatic analysis, development and promotion.
Now in its 38th year, NHI/Shelterforce provides vital information through reports, workshops, conferences, Shelterforce, the only national independent publication written for advocates and professionals dedicated to community development in such areas as housing, jobs, transportation, education, health, environment, and other social justice sectors, and through communications in digital media. |
