Amusement parks are fun, so working at Luna Park in Coney Island is a blast! Marketing interns will gain the hands-on experience of a lifetime as they shake, rattle and roll through the nitty-gritties of the entertainment marketing industry. Our interns each specialize in an area of our Marketing Department but still get learnings, experience and exposure to all aspects of marketing. Interns at Luna Park can expect to learn A TON about marketing with hands-on experience (e.g. we probably don’t need you to get coffee) as well as offering engaging mentors. General Requirements:
• Must be comfortable standing on one’s feet for long periods of time (and dashing across the park in 1 minute flat – we’re still working on that one ourselves)
• Assisting in general departmental tasks as needed – we all pitch in here
• Computer literate with experience in Microsoft Office Suite
• Able to multitask and prioritize in a collaborative, rapidly-changing environment. Self-starters/resourceful folks wanted
• Must be willing to ride some roller coasters and thrill rides—while we won’t force you to do anything you’re uncomfortable with, we DO encourage you to expand your limits
• Must be a current undergraduate or recent graduate
• Possess a valid driver’s license and be comfortable driving (but you don’t need a car)
• Need to commit to a full tour (3 months) of the internship. Additional tours (longer internships) are available. Candidates coming in for the summer tour are requested to stay through Labor Day
• Need to be able to be present some nights, weekends and holidays (welcome to the service industry folks)
Different Areas of Focus: Alliance for Coney Island, Design, Events, Film/Photo, Finance, Group Sales, Lighting, Online, Partnerships, Promotions and PR.
While every intern will have their own specialized area, you can also expect to work/learn collaboratively as a team.
Intern Specializations:
Promotions – Good for majors in: Communications, Marketing, Event Planning
• Dream up exciting, new and creative ways to drive traffic to the park with new promotion ideas and special offers
• Work on-site to make sure all promotion plans are executed correctly
• Do competitive analysis of other amusement and entertainment venues and recreate effective promotional findings for Luna Park
Photo/Film – Good for majors in: Photography, Film Production, Business
• Be in communication with media, press and production companies concerning in-park film and photo shoots
• Work with our legal team to ensure all paperwork is in order for productions
• Assist managing day-of production events throughout the park
• Assist our in-house photographer with photo and film tasks
• Handle unapproved film/photo productions that take place within park perimeters
Alliance for Coney Island – Good for majors in: Urban Planning, Local Business, Communications
• Be the communication connection between Luna Park and the new merchant association called the Alliance for Coney Island
• Coordinate with internal Luna Park committee members to translate and complete assigned project work
• Manage different Luna Park resources dedicated to the Alliance; for example, a loaned designer
Group Sales – Good for majors in: Business, Sales, Event Planning
• Support the group sales department in communicating Luna Park’s offerings for birthday parties and corporate events
• Prepare, attend and support the Group Sales team at trade shows and other events
• Be responsible for communicating Group Sales offerings through any possible outlet including paid media
Partnerships – Good for majors in: Advertising, Business, Mass Media
• Research potential partners for shared communication opportunities through in-kind/barter agreements
• Liaising with partners and stakeholders to fulfill requests for project management including graphics, copy and production
• Work with our legal team to make sure all paperwork/partnerships are compliant
Finance – Good for majors in: Finance, Accounting, Business
• Manage marketing department finances by working with programs like Excel, FileMaker Pro, and Core Cashless to keep contracts and insertion/purchasing orders processed correctly
• Be a liaison to the finance department for all projects and associated responsibilities
• Work with outside vendors to get project estimates and production orders submitted/processed
Online – Good for majors in: Social Media, Communications, Marketing
• Assist in managing content for our website, social media and e-newsletters, including copy editing, snapping photos/filming vids and optimizing for search
• Track, measure and analyze online performance and communicate findings to the marketing dept.
• Assist in day-to-day digital community management, including damage control, monitoring social channels and responding to guests
• Requires strong interest in online messaging and great communication and writing skills
• Familiarity with design software a plus
Design – Good for majors in: Graphic Design, Art, Advertising
• Need to know Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
• Manipulate and edit photos for advertising and promotional use
• Design layouts for advertisements and fliers
• Manage and organize all graphic collateral
PR – Good for majors in: P.R., Event Planning, Marketing
• Serve as the liaison between Luna Park and our out-of-house PR firm
• Work hand in hand with our PR team and the Alliance for Coney Island to spread the brand around the world (we’ll start with NYC) and manage crises as they arise
• Conceptualize media placements and find what will be the next “big story”
• Manage and update our unpaid press clips book
Events – Good for majors in: Event Management, P.R., Communications
• Assist our Event Coordinator in managing and creating events at Luna Park properties
• Help coordinate the Luna Park promotions team
• Be in communication with outside event partners in executing projects and events
Lighting – Good for majors in Theatrical and Technical Lighting, Software Programming, Design
• Create and coordinate new lightning designs for the Parachute Jump
• Organize and archive all previous lighting cues
• Be in communication with the General Manager about the creative programming idea and best practices
