The magazine industry has found an unlikely champion of diversity: Men's Vogue. While other magazines shy away from putting African-Americans on the cover in the belief that they don't sell as well, the new Condé Nast men's magazine has devoted four of its 12 covers so far to black men: Tiger Woods, Barack Obama, Denzel Washington and, in December, Will Smith.

Web Sites Tearing Down the Pay Wall (WaPo)
Frank Ahrens: The lesson seems to be that online consumers will pay only for niche content of intense interest to them — such as specialized industry news from trade publications, inside sports news, gambling tips, pornography and so on. As Slate editor Jacob Weisberg put it: It's all "pornography of one kind or another." But most consumers expect free mainstream content.

USA Today Announces Buyout Offer Seeking 45 Newsroom Takers (E&P)
In a memo to staffers, editor Ken Paulson said, "It's unfortunate that we have to take these steps ... Unfortunately, revenue has not kept pace and we're now facing the same cutbacks that so many other news organizations have already experienced."
