‘Gatsby’ Promo Also Highlights Kanye, Jay Z, and Jack White

The Great Gatsby is coming to theaters, which means I’ll be returning to my yellowing, dog-eared copy of the book to once again take in the greatness of each glorious word. But if the book is missing one thing, it’s a soundtrack.

Director Baz Luhrmann took care of that with the trailer, released late yesterday and now making the rounds on the Web. In addition to its sexy, sophisticated, 1920s look, and a cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio (Gatsby) and Carey Mulligan (Daisy), the clip has music by Jay Z, Kanye West, and Jack White, who’s doing a cover of U2′s “Love is Blindness” that manages to be more pained and soulful than the original.

With everything else so true to the time, the question is whether modern music works. MTV.com makes the case why it does.

With video consumption on the rise, it’s important for video creators to remember these sorts of details. They make videos more watchable and more likely to be shared.

Luhrmann, you’ll recall, directed Moulin Rouge, a DiCaprio/Claire Danes version of Romeo & Juliet, and the videos featured in the Met’s Costume Institute exhibit “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations,” now on view.

The sight of those shirts floating from that balcony is just too much. There isn’t a thing about this trailer that’s wrong.
