Jennifer Gilbert, Founder of Save the Date, Joins ‘Marie Claire’ To Talk About Her New Memoir

The name Jennifer Gilbert might ring a bell. If you’re a Real Housewives of New York fan, you’ll remember her as the “normal” one whose sanity was probably a big reason why she she wasn’t on the show for too long.

If you’re a Page Six reader, you may recall a lawsuit that happened right around the time of the show.

If you’re in the event planning business, you may know her as the founder of Save the Date, which put together Monday’s Fifi Awards, dubbed the Oscars of the fragrance world.

And if you’re a Marie Claire subscriber, you may recognize Gilbert from the chilling excerpt the magazine published from Gilbert’s new book I Never Promised You a Goodie Bag, a memoir about the brutal and random attack she suffered and the rough path to recovery and success afterward.

“If I had to guess, I’d say there were close to 40 stitches — at least 15 of those just to sew up my neck. They used surgical glue for the puncture wounds. For weeks after, I’d need to use a walker,” she writes. At the age of 22 and just back in the States following a trip to London, Gilbert was stabbed repeatedly by a stranger while visiting a friend in Manhattan.

Gilbert was the special guest at Marie Claire‘s @Work “Power Lunch” event today in Midtown, where she talked openly about dealing with the unending curve balls life has thrown at her. In addition to the attack, she learned a couple of years ago that her son has alopecia, an autoimmune disease that causes severe hair loss.

So how does Gilbert reconcile the personal pain she’s felt with the joy and satisfaction she’s meant to bring people with her events?

“I got through my sadness and despair through these events,” she told PRNewser after lunch, explaining how the work and her clients helped her both manage and overcome her pain. Even with there were complaints about comparatively insignificant things (“That’s not the right shade of blue,” for example), Gilbert says she doesn’t minimize the concerns of others.

“These events kind of helped me put my life back together,” she told us.
