Oh…hell to the no!
With respect to Dr. King, “I have a dream…that someday marketers that do this repugnant #$%! will lose a job, the ability to operate photoshop and possibly conscience just for a week or two.” Just let that galling picture sink in. That’s “Freedom 2 Twerk” and Dr. Martin Luther King throwing up some inane thug sign promoting said event. And then there’s that bling.
The hell?! On what planet in some distant twerkiverse is this crap a good idea?
Martin Luther King fought the most valiant fight against racial oppression and for civil rights in the 1960s. No link is needed because if you don’t know about what this day means to so many people, then you need to get your narrow behind in a library today. (You know, if they were open.)
However, now that the war is won, battles continue to rage in a court of retail? Why, just why?
Last week, when Hennessy Cognac thought targeting a demo with cocktail sales created seriously bad mojo, that should have been a red flag. It wasn’t and all hell has broke loose in the retail world. Marketers will find any holiday to shill for a product. While I agree with that mentality during the holidays or Valentine’s Day, why MLK Day?
Thanks to the IBTimes, we have notice for 23 deals and discounts for this cherished holiday that so many abuse just to go shopping. Amazing how the man’s death created 20 percent off on $100 Samsonite luggage, up to 75 percent off for online sales at Bloomingdales or all-you-can-eat pancakes at IHOP. Because when I think of a ‘Letter from a Birmingham Jail,’ I can’t recall where Dr. King so eloquently relished his joy in free maple syrup, bathrobes and a douche bag to pack it in.

Okay, then. Now, I don’t want to come across like a ‘Freedom Rider’ (although I am most proud that Dr. King is an Alpha man), but there is so far you can go with marketing. And this isn’t that boundary. It’s way over that thing. Since 1986, you could see ne’er-do-well marketers, advertisers and flacks pushing that envelope just a smidge ahead every year.
Now, we can “Twerk for Equality.” What? No Justice, No Peace…unless you shake that @$$?!
I think it was MLK who said, “Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.”
These people are not them. Happy MLK Day, everyone. Read a book or something. Mmmmkay? Thanks.
