NYC’s Mayor Bloomberg To Receive Webby Lifetime Achievement Award

The Webby Awards will be giving this year’s Lifetime Achievement award to New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg, citing his work with Bloomberg L.P., which began a decade before the ubiquity of digital technologies we use daily.

Since those days, the Mayor has been a big-time advocate for NYC as a tech hub, with city government making the push at Social Media Week events and the Mayor making an appearance in a video that pitches the city as the place for tech startups. And just today, he introduced us to the Made in NY Digital Map, which pinpoints the location of all the key technology people and places around New York.

“Thirty years ago, he started on of the first digital media companies, using technology to provide critical information to the financial marketplace and transforming that industry in the process,” David-Michel Davies, executive director of the Webbys told us in an email. “This is ten years before anyone had even typed the letters www. As Mayor of New York, he has make remarkable efforts to position the city and its leading industries as a digital capital for years to come.

Separately, The Webbys have partnered with BuzzFeed to present the Meme of the Year. A clip with all the nominees above. And you can cast your vote here.

The Webbys will be held on May 21 at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom hosted by comedian Patton Oswalt.
