Call me old fashioned, but there’s just something totally un-romantic about propositioning a potential prom date via Twitter. That is, unless you’re courting a major company, not a classmate.
Seventeen-year-old Muthana Sweis, a student at Marist High School in Chicago, sent out the following tweet in January:
In an appropriately-gushing response, Netflix accepted, tweeting:
So how exactly does Netlix “third wheel” it to prom? Well, for one thing, by providing some serious wheels.
Sweis got to choose between a few different TV-themed rides, and ended up selecting a classic ’50s Buick from “Grease” and a chauffeur dressed as John Travolta’s character, Danny. Oh, and for good measure, he also got wear a James Bond-esque tux.
Netflix filmed the whole thing, creating the above video and sharing it on YouTube. As of this writing, it already has over 11,000 views.
Sometimes it takes countless hours of brainstorming and planning to come up with a clever, potentially-viral stunt; other times, inspiration and opportunity are handed directly to you on a golden platter. Netflix did an exemplary job of recognizing and utilizing the gift that fell into its lap — social engagement, branding, humor, and a video to boot.
I’d consider asking the company to be the third wheel at my upcoming nuptials just to see what would happen, but my fiancé already thinks he’s some combination of Alan Grant, James Bond and Tony Stark, so I’m not sure I should fuel the fire…
