Within Minutes, Northeast Earthquake News Overtakes Twitter

News that a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Virginia with tremors felt across the northeast sent people scrambling to Twitter to share the news and make a funny. Within minutes, Buzzfeed and Business Insider had collected the “best Twitter responses,” Foursquare is taking check-ins at @Earthquakepocalypse, and Mashable has got its earthquake/Twitter coverage.
News outlets, many, of course, with newsrooms in the affected areas, are providing constant updates about travel interruptions and other responses on Twitter, websites, and other platforms. The New York Times says details have still coming in and CNN says that Twitter traffic implies that the quake was felt across the East Coast. The Washington Post also has tons of coverage (and it’s own top tweets list).
