Evening News Ratings: Week of May 6

While still trailing in the evening news race, the “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” continues to show the most growth in viewership: up +12% compared to the same week last year. At the same time, it’s the only evening broadcast to shed viewers in the ad-friendly A25-54 demo, down -2% compared to last year. “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” extends its winning streak among total viewers to 191 weeks and among younger viewers to 233 weeks. “Nightly” is up year-over-year in both total viewers (+3%) and younger viewers (+4%). “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” is up in total viewers (+1%) and flat in the demo.

Evening News Ratings: Week of April 29

For the week of April 29, all three evening newscasts grew in total viewers but shed younger viewers compared to the same week last year.

“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” was on top as usual, up +2% in viewers while down -4% in the demo. “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” was up +4% in viewers and down -4% in the demo. “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was once again up the most in viewers: +6% but down the most in the demo: -6% .

Evening News Ratings: Week of April 22

“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” was on top as usual for the week of April 22, beating “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” by +605,000 Total Viewers and +320,000 viewers in the A25-54 demographic. “World News” leads “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” by +1,078,000 Total Viewers and +155,000 A25-54 viewers.

But only Pelley’s newscast has grown in both ratings measurements compared to the same week last year, up +12% in Total Viewers and +5% in A25-54 viewers. “World News” is up +3% in Total Viewers and down -4% in the A25-54 demographic and “Nightly” is flat in both ratings measurements.

Evening News Ratings: Week of April 15

The three evening newscasts added 3.5 million viewers compared to a typical week last week as interest intensified following Monday’s attacks at the Boston Marathon.

“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” was the most-watched and compared to the same week last year was up +18% in total viewers and +35% in younger viewers. “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” was up +19% / +24%, respectively, while “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” showed the most viewer growth: +26%, while also up +21% in the demo.

Friday’s broadcasts on all three networks are excluded from the weekly averages as the newscasts were effectively pre-empted by the breaking news of the capture of the second suspect in the bombings.

“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” won the week of April 8, and was the only show to grow in both Total Viewers and younger viewers compared to the same week last year. “Nightly” was up +2% in viewers and up +3% in the demo.

The “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” showed the most year-over-year viewer growth: up +5%, but down the most in the demo: -9%. “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” was up +4% in viewers and down -2% in the demo.

Due to the NCAA Basketball Final Monday, “CBS Evening News” is based on 4 days (Tues-Fri).

Evening News Ratings: Week of April 1

All three evening newscasts are have grown in total viewers compared to the same week last year: “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” was up +6%, “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” was up +8% and “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was up +10%.

Among younger viewers, NBC is up +9% and ABC is up +8% year-over year. CBS is down slightly, -2%.

For the week of April 1, NBC had a +974,000 viewer lead on ABC, which leads CBS by +987,000.

Evening News Ratings: Week of March 25 and Q1 2013

All three evening newscasts grew their total viewer audiences last week compared to the same week last year. “NBC Nightly News” with Brian Williams” remains the #1 evening newscast with more than a half million viewer lead on #2 “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer.” But the ABC broadcast continues to close the gap which last year stood at 874,000 viewers. The younger viewer gap has also narrowed by -78%.

On Good Friday, “ABC World News” was retitled “Wrld News Tonite” and is excluded from the average. Due to NCAA Basketball “CBS Evening News” aired with low coverage leaving Thursday and Friday out of the average. Only “NBC Nightly News” is based on all 5 days.

Numbers for the week of March 25, 2013:

This also closes out the first quarter of 2013. For the quarter, “Nightly News” wins in both measurements, but is down -2% in total viewers and down -4% in younger viewers compared to Q1 2012. Both “World News” and “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” grew viewership. ABC is up +4% in total viewers and +2% in younger viewers while CBS is up +7% and 1%, respectively. It was CBS’ best Q1 in total viewers since 2007.

Evening News Ratings: Week of March 18

ABC’s “World News with Diane Sawyer” saw double digit viewer growth last week when compared to the same week last year. “World News” was up +11% in total viewers and up +7% in younger viewers.

The Sawyer broadcast has seen increases in 11 of the last 12 weeks in total viewers and has cut its year-to-year margins with “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” among both Total Viewers (-56% – 525,000 vs. 1.20 million) and A25-54 viewers (-69% – 146,000 vs. 467,000).

Once again, “Nightly” was the clear winner in both categories for the week, showing +1% total viewer growth, but down -7% in younger viewers.

“CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” also saw growth compared to last year: +10% in total viewers and +4% in younger viewers.

“CBS Evening News” aired with low coverage and was broken out on Thursday and Friday due to NCAA Basketball. Ratings for both days were excluded from the average.

Evening News Ratings: Week of March 11

The first week of daylight saving time is already taking a bite out of evening news viewership. 2.6 million fewer people (or 11%) tuned in to one of the three evening newscasts last week, compared to the week prior. And this was during a week which saw the election of a new pope.

Compared to the same week last year only “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” saw growth: +9% in total viewers and +5% in younger viewers.

Evening News Ratings: Week of March 4

While the broadcast remains a distant third place, the “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” continues to show the most growth of the three evening newscasts. Compared to the same week last year the Pelley newscast is up 11% in total viewers and up +12% in younger viewers. ” The gap between Pelley’s broadcast and #1 “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams,” has shrunk from 2.5 million viewers last year, to 2.1 million last week.

“ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” is up too: +8% / +6%, and for the 10th straight week also narrowed the gap with “Nightly.” Williams’ broadcast, too, saw year-over-year growth: +3% in total viewers and +5% in younger viewers.

With daylight saving time now underway, and Spring approaching, the challenge for all the shows will be to keep viewers tuned in for the evening newscasts.
