Evening News Ratings: Week of Sept. 22

evening news_2014Another split in the evenings: “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams takes total viewers while “ABC World News Tonight with David Muir” takes the A25-54 demo. Compared to the same week last year Muir’s broadcast showed the most across-the-board growth: up +11% in viewers and up +9% in the demo.

“Nightly’s” lead on “World News Tonight” last week was 158,000 viewers (less than 2%). That’s the closest ABC has gotten to NBC in four weeks, which was Diane Sawyer‘s final week, and “WNT” got within 40,000 viewers.

“CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was also up in both measurements: up +3% in viewers and up +4% in the demo. “Nightly News” was up in viewers (+2%) but down in the demo (-7%) year-over-year.

Only ‘World News Tonight’ Sees Growth in Viewers and Demo For 2013-2014 Season

While all three network newscasts can celebrate audience growth in the just-completed 2013-2014 season, only “World News Tonight with David Muir” has seen growth among both total viewers and the preferred news demo of Adult 25-54 viewers.

Compared to the 2012-2013 season, “World News Tonight,” which spent most of the season as “World News with Diane Sawyer,” grew +4% in viewers and +5% in the demo.

“Nightly News with Brian Williams” saw the most viewership growth: up +6%, but was down the most in the demo: -3%. “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley,” which saw an executive producer change in the spring, was up +5% in viewers and down -2% in the demo.

“Nightly News” won the season in both total viewers and the demo, though “World News,” took the demo in the second half of the season, winning both Q2 and Q3.

And while both ABC and “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” are growing in the demo, “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” is down compared to the same week last year. CBS is up a whopping +13% in A25-54 viewers, ABC is up +9% and NBC is down -7%.

Among total viewers, “Nightly News” continues as the most-watched evening newscast, a winning streak that is entering its 6th year. All three broadcasts were up in total viewers: +4% for ABC, and +2% for both NBC and CBS.

evening news_2014ABC’s “World News Tonight” and “NBC Nightly News” once again split the top honors in the ratings last week. The Brian Williams-anchored NBC newscast took total viewers, while the David Muir-anchored ABC broadcast won the A25-54 demo, its sixth straight win.

It was No. 3 “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” that showed the most demo growth, up +10% year-over-year. “World News Tonight” was up +6% in the demo and “Nightly News” was down -4% in the demo. Among total viewers, all three programs showed growth: ABC was up +5% while NBC and CBS were each up +3%.

evening news_2014In David Muir‘s first week at the helm of “World News Tonight,” the ABC newscast once again took the younger demo while “NBC Nightly News” with Brian Williams” led among total viewers. This is ABC’s 5th consecutive weekly win and 9th of the last 10 weeks in the demo. And this was a milestone week for Williams as well. “Nightly News” marks 5 years straight at No. 1.

All three newscasts were up among total viewers compared to the same week last year, with “Nightly” up the most (+9%). “Nightly” was also the only newscast down in the demo (-2%). “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was up the most in the demo (+11%) and up +7% in viewers. “World News Tonight” was up +8% in viewers and up +10% in the demo.

On Tuesday, Muir’s first official day as anchor and the first day NBC and ABC were rated head-to-head “Nightly” topped “World News Tonight” by +529,000 total viewers and +111,000 A25-54 viewers.

Because of Labor Day and sports coverage, NBC is based on three days: Tue, Wed, Fri. CBS is based on thee days: Tue, Wed, Thu. ABC is based on four days: Tue-Fri.

EveningNewsNewIn Diane Sawyer’s final week, which was actually a half-week since her last day was Wednesday, “World News” came within 40,000 viewers of No. 1 “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams,” with Lester Holt sitting in for the vacationing Williams.

That’s the closest ABC has come to NBC in 5 years, since the week of September 7, 2009, which was the last week ABC topped NBC in the total viewer measurement. Brian Williams has been on a winning streak since.

“World News” took the younger viewer demo for the eighth time in nine weeks, with a +272,000 lead on “Nightly,” its biggest gap in 7 years, since the week of July 2, 2007. Compared to the same week last year only “World News” showed growth.

NBC’s average is based on four days, with Monday excluded because of the Emmy awards. ABC and CBS are based on five days.

EveningNewsNewFrom continuing coverage of the protests in Ferguson, MO to the murder of an American journalist by ISIS militants, all three evening newscasts saw a jump in viewership last week, compared to the same week last year.

“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” and “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” were up the most in total viewers, each up +12% while Pelley’s broadcast was also up the most in the demo, +11%. “World News with Diane Sawyer,” in her penultimate week, once again won the week among younger viewers with a +3% lead on “Nightly News,” that’s the 7th win in the last 8 weeks.

“Nightly” continues its winning streak — now nearing five years — as the No. 1 program among total viewers with a +10% lead on “World News.”

All three newscasts were up in both measurements from last week, and from last year, as breaking news from the Midwest and the Middle East factored in to increasing viewership.

ABC and NBC were up +11% in viewers vs. the same week last year, while “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was up +8%. In the A25-54 demographic, NBC was up +2%, ABC was up +11% and CBS was up +6%.

Evening News Ratings: Week of August 4

EveningNewsNew“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” wins another week in total viewers; “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” wins another week (5 of the last 6) in the A25-54 demo; and “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” is the only evening newscast to grow compared to the same week last year.

“Nightly” held a +441,000 viewer lead (+6%) on “World News,” while the ABC show’s lead on NBC in the demo was +77,000 (+5%). As for CBS, their broadcast was up +4% in viewers vs. the same week in 2013 but down -1% in the demo.

“World News” was down -1% in viewers and flat in the demo. David Muir was in for Sawyer all week. “Nightly News” was down -2% in viewers and down -16% in the demo.

Evening News Ratings: Week of July 28 & July Sweeps

EveningNewsNewDiane Sawyer is stepping aside from “World News” this month with another sweeps win under her belt. “World News” has now won back-to-back sweeps, May and July, in the A25-54 demo. It’s the first time that’s happened in 7 years. “World News” also had its most-watched July sweep in 7 years. Only “World News” grew year-over-year in the demo: +5%, and was also up +6% among total viewers.

“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” wins July among total viewers, and was up +1% vs. last July. This is the show’s 28th consecutive sweeps month win in total viewers. “Nightly” was down -9% in the demo. “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” also saw mixed results in July: up in viewers (+2%) and down in the demo (-5%). In fact, “Nightly News” and “Evening News” delivered the lowest sweep for any sweep period in the A25-54 demo since at least 1991, when electronic records began.

For the week of July 28, “Nightly News” was on top in total viewers and the A25-54 demo and was the only broadcast up in both measurements: +5% in viewers and up +1% in the demo compared to the same week last year. “World News” was up in viewers (+4%) and flat in the demo while “Evening News” was flat in viewers and up +4% in the demo.
