Evening News Ratings: Week of December 15

eveningnews2015“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” won another week in both total viewers and the demo, delivering its biggest total viewer win over ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” in four months.

But compared to the same week last year Muir’s newscast showed the biggest growth in both total viewers and the demo. “WNT” was up +8% in viewers and up +11% in the demo.

“Nightly” was up +2% in viewers and down -4% in the demo. No. 3 “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley“ was up +4% in viewers and up +2% in the demo.

eveningnews2015“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” won another week in both total viewers and the demo, and is up +2% season-to-date in viewers: its best seasonal start in 9 years.

No. 2 ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” showed the most growth of the three evening newscasts compared to the same week last year: +5% in viewers and up +4% in the demo, and has narrowed the gap with “Nightly” -41% in total viewers.

NBC was up +1% in viewers and down -10% in the demo. No. 3 “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was flat in viewers and down -8% in the demo.

evening news_2014For the week  Brian Williams celebrated his 10th anniversary as “Nightly News” anchor, the NBC newscast took wins in both total viewers and the A25-54 demo. This is NBC’s third win in the demo in the last five weeks, and its biggest win in the demo over ABC since March.

Compared to the same week last year “Nightly” lost viewers in the demo (-3%) while growing +1% in total viewers.

ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” showed the most growth of the three evening newscasts: +11% in viewers and +5% in the demo. Season to date, the ABC broadcast is No. 1 in the demo, leading “Nightly News” by 20,000 viewers. “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was also up in the demo (+4%) and flat in viewers.

evening news_2014For millions, Black Friday ended by sitting down and watching the network evening news. “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” drew a whopping 12.59 million viewers for its Friday night telecast. “Nightly News” won the holiday-shortened week in total viewers, while ABC “World News Tonight with David Muir” won in the A25-54 demo.

Compared to the same week last year “World News Tonight” saw the most growth: up +8% in viewers and up +11% in the demo. “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was also up: +2 in viewers and +9% in the demo. “Nightly News” was up +1% in viewers and down -9% in the demo.

Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, NBC is based on a four-day average (Mon, Tue, Wed, Fri) while ABC and CBS are based on two-day averages (Mon, Tue).

ABC ‘World News Tonight’ Wins First November Sweep in Younger Demo in 18 Years

DavidMuirABC’s “World News Tonight” won its first November Sweep in the A25-54 demo in 18 years. November also saw the lowest Sweep in that younger demo for “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” since at least 1991, when electronic records began.

This is the first sweeps month with anchor David Muir in the “World News Tonight” chair and the third consecutive sweeps win in the younger demo for the ABC newscast. Former anchor Diane Sawyer took wins in May and again in July.

“Nightly News” wins the month among total viewers with a +565,000 lead on “World News Tonight.” But ABC has cut that lead nearly in half. Last November, “Nightly” had a 1.095 million total viewer lead.

“World News Tonight” also saw the most growth of the three evening newscasts compared to the Nov. 2013 Sweep. ABC was up +9% in viewers and up +12% in the demo; “Nightly” was up +2% in viewers but down -4% in the demo; and No. 3 “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was up +1% in viewers and up +3% in the demo.

evening news_2014“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” reclaimed the top spot in total viewers and the A25-54 demo for the week of Nov. 17 while ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” showed the most growth of the three evening newscasts.

“Nightly News” edged “World News Tonight” by 30,000 viewers or +1% in the demo. The ABC broadcast had won the younger demo in 12 of the last 13 weeks. NBC was up +5% in viewers and up +7% in the demo. ABC grew +12% in viewers and +18% in the demo. “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was also up over last year: +1% in viewers and +4% in the demo.

evening news_2014As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, more Americans are tuning into the evening newscasts. Last week all three network broadcasts grew in both total viewers and the demo from the prior week.

“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” holds first place in viewers and was up +3% compared to the same week last year, but down -5% in the A25-54 demo.

ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” regained the No. 1 spot in the A25-54 demo, and saw the most overall growth: up +9% in viewers and up a whopping +16% in the demo vs. last year.

The “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” experienced +4% viewer growth, but was down -1% in the demo.

evening news_2014The return to Standard Time and the midterm elections combined to give all three newscasts week-to-week gains.

“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” also retakes the lead in the A25-54 demo, which ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” had owned for the last 11 weeks.

Compared to the same week last only Muir’s newscast is up in both viewers and the demo: +9% in viewers and +6% in the demo. “Nightly News” was up +2% in viewers but down -6% in the demo while the “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was down -2% in viewers and up +2% in the demo.

evening news_2014“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” wins another week in total viewers, while ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” wins among the younger demo. It’s “WNT’s” 11th win in a row in the demo, and 268th week at No.1 for Williams among total viewers.

Only No. 3 “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” grew the demo audience, +2% compared to the same week last year. “Nightly” was down -10% and “WNT” was down -1%.

Among total viewers, Williams’ broadcast was up slightly over last year, Muir gained +4% in viewers and Pelley was down -2% in viewers.

evening news_2014Another split in the evenings as “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” takes total viewers while ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” wins in the A25-54 demo. Muir’s newscast was the only one to show growth: +2% in the demo compared to the same week last year. “Nightly” was down -10% in the demo while “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was down less than -1% in the demo.

All three newscasts shed total viewership: NBC was down -2%, ABC down -1% and CBS down -5%.

With three World Series games and Thursday Night Football, overall evening news viewership was impacted last week. In fact, Thursday’s “CBS Evening News” is excluded from the average due to NFL football.
