‘CBS Sunday Morning’ Has Best November Sweep Since 1987

Osgood“CBS Sunday Morning” delivered 6.01 million viewers for the month, its best November Sweep delivery since the advent of people meters in 1987.

The Charles Osgood-hosted program finishes the November Sweep as the top Sunday morning newscast. The show delivered its best November Sweeps audience since 1994 in households and since 2009 in the A25-54 demographic. Compared to last November, “Sunday Morning” is up +12% in total viewers, +8% in households and +7% in the demo.

The success of “Sunday Morning” gave a lead-out boost to “Face the Nation,” which had its best November Sweep delivery in more than 25 years.

Nov. 2013 Ratings: Fox News Primetime #2 Among All Cable Networks

Fox News finished its 143rd consecutive month as the number one cable news network in November, beating MSNBC and CNN combined in both total day and primetime. FNC was second in all of cable news in primetime this month, finishing behind only ESPN. But like its competitors, Fox News saw double-digit declines compared to the same month last year, when the Presidential election was held.

The ratings for November 2013 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 2,011,000 total viewers / 348,000 A25-54
  • Total Day Mon-Sun): 1,201,000 total viewers / 248,000 A25-54

In primetime, Fox News was down -21% in total viewers and -41% in the A25-54 demographic compared to November 2012. In total day, FNC is down -18% and -30%, respectively.

November was the first full month for Fox News’ revamped primetime lineup. “The O’Reilly Factor” was down -17% in total viewers and -31% in the demo compared to the same month last year. The 9pmET hour of “The Kelly File” was down -10% in total viewers and -27% in the demo compared to November 2012, when Sean Hannity held the timeslot, and “Hannity” was down -21% and 31%, respectively, compared to the 10pmET hour of “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren” last year.

Since the debut of the new primetime lineup, “The Kelly File” is up +41% in total viewers and +29% in the demo and “Hannity” is up +21% and +26%, respectively. Read more

Nov. 2013 Ratings: Chris Matthews is Tops for MSNBC

Like the other networks, MSNBC was down across the board compared to Nov. 2012, which saw the presidential election. In total day MSNBC was down -45% in viewers and down -52% in the demo. In primetime, the network lost half its viewership and more than half (-57%) in the demo.

The ratings for November, 2013 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 645,000 Total Viewers / 190,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 401,000 Total Viewers / 124,000 A25-54

MSNBC was the No. 2 news network behind Fox News and ahead of CNN. The most-watched show on MSNBC in November, is also its most venerable. “Hardall with Chris Matthews” averaged 937,000 total viewers to No.2 “The Rachel Maddow Show’s” 914,000. Maddow is still MSNBC’s No. 1 show in the demo averaging 224,000 to Matthews’ 219,000.

Nov. 2013 Ratings: CNN Shows Hit Year Lows

While all the news networks were down this month compared to last November, due to the 2012 election, CNN was down the most. In the key A25-54 demo, the network was down -62% in primetime and down -59% for total day viewing.

The ratings for November, 2013 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 481,000 Total Viewers / 153,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 335,000 Total Viewers / 100,000 A25-54

With the news cycle dominated by partisan politics, CNN continued to suffer in the ratings. In Total Day, CNN is delivering its lowest rated month since August 2012 in total viewers and the A25-54 demo.

Erin Burnett: Outfront, “AC360″ and “Piers Morgan Live”all had yearly lows in both total viewers and key demo. However, year-to-date, the 8pm hour of Anderson Cooper‘s show is up +25% in viewers and up +26% in the demo, the most growth of any cable news show in that hour, compared with the 2012-year-to-date. Burnett’s and Morgan’s shows are also up year-to-date as is every hour on CNN from 6am to 10pm.

Nov. 2013 Ratings: HLN Down the Least of Cable News Networks

HLN placed fourth behind Fox News, CNN and MSNBC in November. Like its competitors, the network was down across the board year-over-year, but compared to the other networks, HLN was down the least.

The ratings for November 2013 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 278,000 Total Viewers / 90,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 213,000 Total Viewers / 81,000 A25-54

In total day, HLN was down -7% in total viewers and -14% in A25-54 viewers compared to the same month last year. In primetime, the network is down -2% in total viewers and down -17% in the demo.

HLN’s top-rated show was “Weekend Mysteries,” which averaged 356,000 total viewers and 120,000 in the A25-54 demographic. “Nancy Grace” was next with 321,000 total viewers and 96,000 A25-54 viewers.
