CNN Staffing up in DC Bureau For Two Expanded Beats

CNN DC bureau chief Sam Feist is expanding the newsroom and in the process hiring several new staffers.

Feist sent a memo today, obtained by TVNewser, about the expansion of the America Bureau which will call for more coverage from two new beats: Crime and Justice and Aviation and Regulation. “We believe these areas are rich in opportunities for reporting, investigations, and breaking news,” writes Feist.

The network is posting new jobs for both correspondents and producers. The staff currently assigned to the America Bureau will now be assigned to one of the two new beats.

Memo after the jump…

Date: Tue, 8 Nov 2011 14:34:29 -0500
To: CNN DC Bureau
Subject: Expanded CNN Washington newsgathering

To the Washington Bureau from Edith and Sam:

We are pleased to announce that we are going to expand our reporting out of the CNN Washington Bureau to include more coverage of “crime and justice” and “aviation and regulation.” We believe these areas are rich in opportunities for reporting, investigations, and breaking news. The America Bureau, as it is currently constituted, will be split in order to create the two new beats. We will be developing these beats in the coming weeks as described below:

CRIME AND JUSTICE: This new beat will cover everything from the Supreme Court to the Justice Department to the FBI and all other federal law enforcement agencies in between. Domestic terrorism investigations, public corruption trials, Customs and Border Protection, and drug interdiction will also be part of this beat.

AVIATION AND REGULATION: This new beat will cover all facets of transportation in America from air to rail to highway to maritime to space. The beat will also cover the many agencies in Washington that have a daily impact on the lives of all Americans – - from the TSA to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to the FDA to the EPA and beyond.

We are immediately posting jobs for two new DC-based correspondents along with postings for new producers. The staff currently assigned to the America Bureau will now be assigned to one of the two newly created beats.

We look forward to fully staffing these beats in the coming weeks.
