CNN has announced it is expanding its domestic newsgathering presence while introducing a relatively new title into the lexicon: "all-platform journalists."

The all-platform journalists will join traditional general assignment reporters and CNN's roster of show-based correspondents in 10 new U.S. cities. Those cities include Columbus, Ohio; Denver; Houston; Las Vegas; Minneapolis, MN; Orlando, FL; Philadelphia; Phoenix; Raleigh-Durham, NC; and Seattle. In most cases, the bureaus are expected to be located at CNN affiliates in those markets.

"CNN's rapid adoption of new technology over the years put us in the enviable position to be able to expand at a time when others are cutting back," said senior VP of newsgathering Nancy Lane in a press release. "This expansion is a critical component of CNN Worldwide's overall strategy for increased content ownership."

The expansion can go forward due in large part to advances in technology. CNN uses lightweight kits combining cameras, editing and transmission technology (satellite and Internet) into a laptop-based system. The bureaus are being rolled out now, and could be up and running by the end of the year.
