Why A Cable News Channel is Holding a Newspaper SummitThis week, the original cable news channel is putting on a newspaper summit. It's the next phase of CNN wire, a content service meant to take on the Associated Press. CNN Worldwide president Jim Walton tells the New York Times the "CNN Newspaper Summit," is "kind of a get-to-know-you" gathering of some of America's newspaper editors. The goal is for American newspapers and their Web sites to end their associations with the AP and consider using CNN's cheaper service. Walton says in addition to the global web of CNN journalists, CNN stars could also participate. "It's not unusual for Anderson Cooper to appear online or on CNN International," he says. And not only is CNN getting into the news wire business, it's also cutting back on its use of outside news providers. Last year CNN dropped Reuters. The Times reports CNN plans to drop the AP for CNN.com in January while keeping it for the cable channel. • Related: — CNN Courts Newspapers with Wire Service — CNN Announces "All-Platform Journalists" Email This Post |
