FBN Headin to N'awlins

fbn_5-16.jpgThis year's National Cable & Telecommunications Association The Cable Show 2008 takes place next week in New Orleans, and Fox Business Network will be there.

On Monday, Money for Breakfast, with anchor Alexis Glick and fill-in anchor Eric Bolling, and Opening Bell, with Glick, airs live from Cafe du Monde. Guest have yet to be announced, but are slated to be local business leaders, sports stars and politicians.

The anchors of Happy Hour, Rebecca Gomez and Cody Willard, will also be in the French Quarter for the conference, anchoring the program on Tuesday from Pat O'Brien's bar.

The NCTA bills the showcase as, "The ultimate opportunity for cable telecommunications professionals to discover new products, advances in technology, and innovative ways to increase customer satisfaction and grow their businesses."

But with FBN talent and shows broadcasting from the conference, another side effect could be the ability to gain exposure for the seven-month-old network, as it looks to expand beyond its current 35 million home reach.

FBN Reporter Fired — But Why?

hussain_5-16.jpgEarlier this week, TVNewser received a tip involving possibly legal problems for the Fox Business Network. The tip involved former Fox Business Network reporter Shahnaz Hussain, who was said to have been fired for complaining about being sexually and racially harassed.

Jossip has the full story, and from the sound of a Fox insider, there may be another reason for her departure — she wasn't a very good reporter. "She could not do live television," the insider said. Jossip has video of some of her reports, done for local affiliates (apparently she "never made it on the FNC or FBN airwaves").

The tip, and the Jossip post, hint at a possible lawsuit, so this may just be the beginning of the story.

> Update: TVNewser commenter xyxy1234 writes, "Shahnaz was very nice and got along with everyone but when we would record those yahoo hits it would take 20 minutes to a half hour for one 2-3 minute hit we had to draw the line somewhere. I know it was business not personal."

The New Look Biz of Daytime

Two new repackaged programs debuted on Fox Business Network yesterday as part of their shuffled daytime line-up. "Countdown to the Closing Bell," (anchored by Liz Claman) at 3pmET and "Fox Business Bulls & Bears," at 4pmET (anchored by Claman and David Asman) feature new logos and graphics:

Peter Barnes Leaves the FBN Anchor Chair

Barnes_5.9.jpgAfter less than seven months in the anchor chair in New York, Fox Business anchor Peter Barnes is returning to Washington to be the Senior Washington correspondent for the network. Barnes had been co-anchor of Money for Breakfast since the channel's launch in October.

Insiders tell us Eric Bolling is among several Fox Bizers who will be rotated in to co-anchor with Alexis Glick. The Barnes move is effective Monday.

Luxury Living With The FBN Team

fbnhaute_5-4.jpgFox Business Network is featured in the new issue of Haute Living magazine (which dubs itself, "the new standard for luxury"). Many of the FBN personalities are quoted in the story, and the overriding theme is "team."

"The recurring sentiment echoed by FOX Business members is the team mentality, which many of the correspondents feel very comfortable with," writes Stephanie Wilson in the feature.

"Along the way, there are certain challenges that come up and come out, and you have to work as a family to try to figure them out," says anchor Jenna Lee.

The piece cites the "largest challenge" for FBN as "growth and distribution," but SVP and anchor Neil Cavuto stresses patience. "I know full well how daunting our odds are, but with FOX News President Roger Ailes' efforts and Rupert Murdoch's vision, we'll get there," he says.

The Benefits of That Single Live Hour

fbnlive_5-3.jpg

For the first time in the network's history, Fox Business Network was live on a Saturday yesterday, as anchor Liz Claman hosted, "Weekend with Warren," at 7pmET last night. And being live for that one hour proved to be tremendously lucky — at the end of the hour, Claman broke the news that the AP was reporting Microsoft was dropping its bid to acquire Yahoo.

At the time, only Fox News Channel was in live programming at 7pmET, and was the second network to report the news. While FBN spent their first (and, so far, only) live weekend hour from Omaha discussing Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting, the breaking news at the end of the hour became the real coup.

Insiders tell TVNewser Claman got word of the AP story in her IFB earpiece from her producer during the final commercial break, and they decided to close with the breaking news at that time.

Tomorrow morning, Claman will interview Warren Buffett at 9:30amET, and we hear another surprise guest, someone on the Berkshire Hathaway board of directors, will be interviewed as well during the hour.

Claman & Glick: The Business of Parenthood

Jersey girl Liz Claman (okay, she's really from SoCal, but she's B & T these days...and damn proud of it) is featured in NJ Monthly's Park Place Magazine. Claman, who once had a sweet commute up the Hudson River to CNBC, lives in Edgewater, NJ, a stone's throw from Fox colleague Geraldo Rivera.

When she trained for the New York City Marathon as a way to figure out her next career step, she didn't even know Fox Business Network existed, but as soon as she heard about it, she quit CNBC. After she sat out the three months of her non-compete clause, Fox came calling.

"When you have a chance to work for a visionary, you don't just say no. These opportunities come along once in a lifetime," she says.

Liz Claman with husband Jeff Kepnes, an EP at CNN, and kids Gabrielle and Julian.

And over on Shine, the Yahoo! women's network, FBN's Alexis Glick did a Q and A with the Mommy Track'd blog:

You were seven months pregnant when you first began appearing on television. What was it like starting your first TV job while pregnant?

Glick: "It was wild! I had no training, no knowledge of cameras, television language or prompters. It was exhilarating, scary and memorable."

Giuliani Hosting America's Nightly Scoreboard

giuliani_5-1.jpgWhat is a presidential candidate to do when he's no longer running? Try hosting a TV show!

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani will guest host America's Nightly Scoreboard tonight on Fox Business Network. The program airs live at 7pmET and is replayed at 10pmET. David Asman in the usual host for America's Nightly Scoreboard.

We hear the guest hosting job will just be for tonight's show.

FBN Live This Saturday Night

clamantv_4-28.jpgFor the first time in its short life, Fox Business Network will be live this weekend, if only for an hour.

Anchor Liz Claman announced today as she finished up an interview with Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett that she would anchor a special, "Weekend with Warren," this Saturday at 7pmET on FBN.

The special will air live from Omaha, Nebraska, the site of the annual meeting attended by about 30,000 Berkshire Hathaway stockholders.

"Weekend with Warren," will feature a round-up of news and analysis from the meeting.

"You know, its a big deal, because we've only been alive here at Fox Business for what, six months? And we're going to take this chance," said Claman on the air.

Related: Claman is featured in this month's LA Confidential, and discussed her hour-long October interview with Buffett: "I always overprepare. I spent weeks preparing. I flew into Omaha and Fox Business airlifted crews and hi-def cameras into town from all over the Midwest."

Cody Willard Unplugged

willard_4-24.jpgHappy Hour co-host Cody Willard spent some time with The Huffington Post's Rachel Sklar and Portfolio's Jeff Bercovici last night at the Financial Times' annual "Meet the FT" party.

The FBN host — who previously said of MSNBC anchor Dan Abrams, "that dude's just jealous," — was in typical "jocular" form.

Sklar writes that Willard jokingly described the happenings at Happy Hour: "You guys don't even know, I get drunk during the show, not for the show!" He quickly recanted: "That was a joke, we never drink during the show" (It's true, we were there — no alcohol).

Bercovici writes about Willard's "signature look," the long hair. "You know what? I'll cut my hair when I want to cut it. It's all on my terms all the time," he said.

Willard did later agreed to Bercovici and Sklar's suggestion to cut his hair for charity. But then will he still be "the grunge Jim Cramer?"
