‘Seasoned’ Producer Was Behind ‘Error’ in Trayvon Martin ‘Today’ Show Story

Reuters digs deeper into a Trayvon Martin story which aired on the “Today” show. Tuesday, a week after the story aired, NBC News completed their investigation into the editing “error” and apologized to viewers adding, “We will be taking the necessary steps to prevent this from happening in the future.” Reuters now reports a “seasoned” producer was to blame for the clip which left out a portion of the 911 call leaving the impression that Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman, immediately told police that Martin was black. In fact, the full tape shows Zimmerman only did so when asked by the 911 dispatcher.

The sources at the network, who declined to identify the producer, said NBC News executives did not know the 911 call was misleadingly edited until news reports surfaced days later on right-leaning blogs including Newsbusters.org and Breitbart.com. The sources described the producer’s actions as a very bad mistake, but not deliberate.

One of the sources said that NBC News President Steve Capus would not lose his job over the incident.

> Update: The New York Times reports the producer has been fired.
