State of the Union: FNC #1, MSNBC #2, CNN #3

Fox News Channel was the most-watched cable news channel during Pres. Obama’s third State of the Union address last night, in both Total Viewers and A25-54 viewers. FNC average 3.8 million viewers during the speech. That’s one million more than watched on MSNBC and 1.2 million more than CNN’s take.

Interesting notes: Fox News got significant tune-in after the president finished which continued into the GOP response. And for the first time ever for a State of the Union, MSNBC topped CNN in Total Viewers, but trailed in the younger demo.

Here’s a breakdown:

  • Address (9:11pm-10:17pm)

FNC: 3,812,000 / 1,143,000
MSNBC: 2,817,000 / 818,000
CNN: 2,670,000 / 1,054,000

  • Address Analysis (10:17pm-10:28pm)

FNC: 4,249,000 / 1,303,000
MSNBC: 2,726,000 / 768,000
CNN: 2,653,000 / 1,047,000

  • GOP Response (10:28pm – 10:35/40pm)

FNC: 4,221,000 / 1,222,000
MSNBC: 2,411,000 / 686,000
CNN: 2,203,000 / 806,000

As for the broadcast networks, Nielsen Fast Affiliates (finals come out later) show CBS drew 7.43m, followed by NBC with 7.19m, ABC at 5.99m and FOX with 5.32m.
