Design Miami Teams with Fendi for 'Craft Punk' in Milan
Expanding upon Design Miami's design performance program, Craft Punk will set invited designers including Simon Hasan, Yuri Suzuki & Household, Studio Libertiny, Peter Marigold, and Massimiliano Adami loose in the sprawling Spazio Fendi to work their own brands of low-tech design magic with the help of discarded materials from Fendi's production process—think leather, Zucca-branded fabrics, plastic decorative elements, and metal hardware. Fendi artisans will be on hand throughout the three-day event, should the designers need some advice on how to get that Selleria leather to fold just so. "'Craft Punk' will comprise an environment in which we have the unique opportunity to see extraordinary design pieces coming to life in front of our eyes," said Design Miami director Ambra Medda in a statement issued by the fair. "[It] will also be as much a lively social event as a creative happening, since it will offer an extraordinary opportunity to get together and meet the designers as they go about their work." As for a sneak preview of the invited designers' crafty plans, we can tell you that Hasan is fixing to boil leather, while Studio Libertiny is coming armed with welding techniques that will allow them to work metal like clay. Sarah Becker has embroidery and collage up her sleeve, and watch out for Studio Glithero, which will experiment with an obscure, old-fashioned printing technique that will transform ceramics and fabrics from plain white into a brilliant blue.
