Wanted: Web Designer Who May Already Have Won Ten Million Dollars!

PCH.jpg

While we can't guarantee it will make you any more likely to receive an early morning visit from the Prize Patrol (and in all likelihood employees are ineligible for company sweepstakes), we did want to alert you to the fact that Publishers Clearing House, they of the plentiful pay-by-installment magazine subscriptions and cash prize promises, is looking for a web designer to join its Port Washington, New York office. The winning candidate's responsibilities will include designing and developing promotional materials for online contests, mailings, and e-mail campaigns while maintaining and organizing project files and images (many of them probably depicting giant piles of cash!). And don't forget to ask in advance to be paid by direct desposit rather than in giant novelty checks.

Wanted: Bookish Designer for Cantabrigian Covers

cambridge.jpgWant to be the only designer on your block employed by a company founded by a 1534 royal charter? Well, here's your ticket to legitimately name dropping Henry VIII at parties and more review copies than are prudent for an urban dweller. The New York City office of Cambridge University Press is searching for a designer to create covers for some of the around 1,200 new books it produces each year (and that's not even counting its historic Bibles list!). The Press is seeking candidates with a strong understanding of 2-C and 4-C design, working knowledge of the Adobe trio (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop) and Quark, as well as a strong eye for detail and proofreading skills. And if you've spent any time in the Boston area, remember, that's home to the "other" Cambridge.

Wanted: Flash Designer Who Will First, Do No Harm

stethoscopes.jpgDid your love for design derail your pre-med plans? Want to get involved in the world of healthcare but get queasy in hospitals? Health information portal WebMD is looking for a Flash designer to execute top-notch timeline animation, scripted animation, and complex action script to develop promotional interactive learning programs in its New York City office. Like the medical profession, WebMD puts a premium on "inventive problem-solving" in a "fast-paced, high-pressured, and sometimes unpredictable" environment. Although the position may sound like something straight out of an episode of ER, we advise you to focus your cover letter on your healing design skills rather than your legendary bedside manner.

Wanted: Elle of a Designer/Art Director

ellemag june.jpg"She's going to work at Hachette Filipaaaaaaacchi. She's going to work at Elle!" Surely we can't be the only ones who treasure this gem of an Isaac Mizrahi non sequitur from the 1994 documentary Unzipped (which, incidentally, was co-produced by Hachette and Miramax). Isaac could be describing you, should you heed Elle's call for a senior designer/associate art director. The search is on for a strong designer who will be responsible for "designing assigned features and sections with opportunity to add his or her vision to this rapidly evolving publication." And they're not kidding about the "rapidly evolving" part. Since the magazine's September 2007 redesign spearheaded by design director Paul Ritter, the book has been getting more visually exciting—and nuanced—by the issue. We suggest prepping for your interview by spending some quality time with Elles from the 80s and perfecting your pronounciation of "Gilles Bensimon."

Wanted: A Graphic Designer with Goals

MLS.jpg

Are you a designer who can explain the difference between an indirect free kick and a direct one? Debate the merits of the Colorado Rapids versus the San Jose Earthquake? Make a case for why the Columbus Crew's Robbie Rogers is the season's biggest surprise so far? Well, then you might be just the designer that Major League Soccer is looking for. The nation's top-flight professional soccer league is in search of a graphic designer to join its New York City team to design and produce final mechanicals for creative services requests (think logos, web banners, collateral print materials, advertising, etc.), provide support to creative services department, and create web-specific graphics. Attention to detail is always a plus, but it's up to you if you want to point out that the league is now in its 13th season, although the job listing says 12th. We'll chalk it up to superstition.

Wanted: Graphic Design Intern Who Can Cover All the Bases

ethused baseball.jpgHey design students, are you still playing the field of summer internships? Think you're ready for the major leagues? Then bat around this opportunity: Major League Baseball is seeking a graphic design intern in its midtown Manhattan office. The all-star intern will support MLB's design services department, which we like to think involves drawing and hobknobbing with Mr. Met (our favorite mascot) but in fact entails everything from assisting in production of environmental design related to the All-Star Game to retail marketing and point-of-purchase design. Bring your PhotoShop, Illustrator, and InDesign skills, but probably best to leave your trusty mitt (and performance-enhancing drugs) at home.

Wanted: A Designer Who Likes to Make Stuff about Making Stuff

rm34_cover.jpg We do love a house-of-mirrors effect, particularly when gainful employment is involved, and so we call your attention to this plum position designing about well, design. That's right mise en abyme fans, the DIYers over at ReadyMade ("a bimonthly print magazine for people who like to make stuff") are searching for a senior designer to join their Berkeley, California-based team. So if you're intrigued at the prospect of graphically conveying how to, say, create a chandelier out of soda bottles, transform a Monopoly game board into a jewelry box, or build what the magazine describes as "a Laundromat-inspired modular bench" (pictured on the cover of the current issue, at right) this just might be the job for you.

new york site.jpgWith Ian Adelman's recent departure from nymag.com to join Tina Brown's new web venture, the search is on for a new online design director for whipsmart New York's visual candy store of a website. Among the responsibilities of the position are developing and maintaining the visual and user experience design for nymag.com, providing art direction for the design staff, and leading the implementation of design best practices. We recommend you ditch the traditional cover letter for something that cleverly-but-not-too-cleverly conveys your insatiable appetite for information graphics.

Wanted: A Designer Ready to Show Some Muscle

wwe.jpg

We recently told you about Coach creative director Reed Krakoff's forthcoming book on Ultimate Fighters. Now here's your chance to pick a fight. World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. (WWE) is looking for a designer/art director with "killer, cutting-edge design ability" to join its Stamford, Connecticut-based creative team. The ideal candidate will be able to communicate punchy visual solutions to marketing strategies and have strong Illustrator and Photoshop skills. The ability to name a few WWE wrestlers probably wouldn't hurt either (and no, Junkyard Dog doesn't count). Did we mention that they have a state-of-the-art fitness center?

Wanted: Art/Design Director with Polish

opi.jpgAre friends and colleagues in awe of your ability to discriminate among the thousands of shades of red and pink? Can you tell a frost from a shimmer at ten paces? Are you aware that Nail Envy is more than a jealous affliction acquired at Home Depot?
