This evening, National Design Award winners including Amory Lovins (Design Mind), Laurene Boym (Product Design), and Calvin Tsao (Interior Design) will participate in a panel discussion about their sources of inspiration and the state of contemporary design in America. In the mood for a walk? Join UnBeige editor emeritus Alissa Walker for her "week of walks," six different urban adventures in celebration of her new book, City Walks Architecture: New York (Chronicle Books). Tonight's walk will begin and end at Jen Bekman Gallery and include a book party. Come early to mix, mingle, and view "A Square," the New York City debut exhibition of photographer Hosang Park. There will be gelato.
Leave work early tomorrow to catch one (or both) of the Cooper-Hewitt's free screenings of Objectified, director Gary Hustwit's journey into the world of industrial design. The feature-length documentary about humanity's complex relationship with manufactured objects made us seriously consider founding a cult dedicated to the worship of Dieter Rams. Make your way to the Art Directors Club for the ADC Young Guns 7 open bar party and exhibition opening, where 50 creatives from 14 countries age 30 and under will be presented with ADC Young Guns Cubes. What's happening next in fashion? Find out from designer Isaac Mizrahi, the Washington Post's Robin Givhan, and designer/moppet Ashley Olsen, who will join Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive tomorrow evening for "The Future of Women's Fashion," a panel discussion at the 92nd Street Y.
Meanwhile, uptown, the Jewish Museum hosts "The Rite Stuff: Design and Modern Observance," a Thursday evening discussion about the role of design in modern life. The all-star panel—including designer Jonathan Adler, artist Allan Wexler, curator Dorothy Twining Globus, and moderator Julie Lasky, editor of Change Observer—will consider how rites connected with birth, marriage, death, and seasonal celebrations have changed in light of contemporary attitudes toward community, family, and the environment.
Want another Thursday evening option? Run (with scissors) over to the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), for an evening of dicussion about cut paper art. Co-hosted by our friends at Print magazine, the event will feature artists Rob Carter, Andrea Dezsö, and Mark Fox in conversation with MAD chief curator David Revere McFadden and writer Claire Lui.
