Position Purpose:
The library media specialist provides students and staff with an enriched library environment containing a wide variety of resources that promote intellectual growth. The media specialist assists in acquiring the skills needed to utilize the library media center resources effectively.
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college/university
- Current Kansas State Teaching Certificate with Library Media endorsement
- Two years teaching experience preferred
- ESOL endorsement preferred
Physical/Emotional Requirements:
The incumbent may be required to use skills such as speaking, hearing, visual, reading, writing, word processing, mobility, and stamina for working long hours and in stress-producing environments.
Performance Responsibilities:
Planning and Preparation
- Demonstrates knowledge of literature and current trends in library media practice
- Knows the state standards, the school’s program, the school improvement plan, and student information needs
- Sets goals for the library media program suitable for the setting and students
- Plans the library media program integrated with the overall school program
- Demonstrates use of information literacy and educational technology
The Library Media Center Environment
- Creates a respectful environment with students and staff
- Fosters a culture of investigation and love of literature
- Manages student behavior effectively
- Organizes physical space for efficient use within constraints
Delivery of Service and Instruction
- Collaborates with staff on instructional units and lessons
- Engages students in literature and information literacy skills
- Assists with technology use in the media center
- Teaches ethical and effective strategies for research and information use
- Shows flexibility and responsiveness
Professional Responsibilities
- Reflects on and improves the media program
- Communicates with the community
- Participates in professional communities and development
- Advocates for the media program
- Demonstrates professionalism
Library Media Program Management
- Knows available resources and access methods
- Develops evaluation plans for the program
- Establishes and maintains policies and procedures
- Maintains and extends the collection within budget
- Maintains audiovisual and instructional technologies
- Prepares budgets, records, and reports
- Manages programs and events in the media center
- Performs other duties as assigned
Terms of Employment:
10.5 months; salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education.
Evaluation:
Performance will be evaluated according to the Board policy on certified employee evaluation.
