SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director, Social Content, the Social Media Content Editor, Evenings & Weekends is responsible for creating multiple quick-turnaround content items a day, while also working on longer-lead projects, and helping the team meet daily content frequency goals. This position will produce content with a focus on Black culture, entertainment, politics, and current trends, that appeal to our audiences and boost brand awareness across all social media platforms. The Social Media Content Editor is crucial in driving our social media strategy forward, ensuring our content remains innovative, competitive, and engaging across various platforms.

The candidate must excel in managing content across multiple social media platforms and staying ahead of competitors. Additionally, the role is responsible for leading the department’s original and exclusive output inclusive of creative brainstorms, managing the content calendar, and developing comprehensive content strategies to ensure targeted goals are met. This role requires a keen eye for trending news, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to inspire, train, and guide a team to produce top-notch content.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Write, develop, edit, and produce engaging and high-quality content and copy tailored for various social media platforms including but not limited to Instagram, X, TikTok, Facebook, and Threads.
  • React quickly to breaking news ensuring all social media content is thoroughly fact-checked, free from errors, and aligned with the company’s brand voice and content standards.
  • Stay abreast on current trending topics that connect with The Shade Room audience and create content based on trends, and digital content best practices
  • Generate exclusive content for all social media platforms.
  • Continuously grow a positive and inclusive social media presence by monitoring commentary on posts under The Shade Room’s social media platforms.
  • Monitor and respond to messages, and interactions in a timely and professional manner.
  • Monitor competitors’ social media activity in real time to stay ahead of trends, news, and potential threats.
  • Ensure all-around consistency (style, fonts, images and tone) on all public platforms.
  • Mentor and develop junior social media team members on best practices, tools, and techniques, fostering a collaborative and creative work environment.
  • Contribute creative and engaging ideas to brainstorm sessions with the social team.
  • Produce weekly creatives and creative content inspired by nostalgia, originality, trending topics, and various platforms, among other sources.
  • Lead regular creative brainstorm sessions to generate innovative content ideas with a focus on exclusive and original content and benchmarks.
  • Ensure all content ideas align with the company’s brand voice and strategic goals.
  • Adjust the content calendar and master doc as needed based on real-time events and trending topics.
  • Create and present seasonal social media content plans to the department head
  • Develop comprehensive content strategies for all social media platforms.
  • Ensure strategies are data-driven and designed to increase engagement and followers.
  • Aid with assigning and top editing social media content
  • Set and monitor daily post-count benchmarks for the social media team with a focus on exclusives, originals, and creatives.
  • Provide regular feedback and support to team members to help them meet their daily post count.
  • Ensure the team maintains high standards of content quality and creativity.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and mentorship to team members to enhance their skills, performance, and brand knowledge.
  • Review all content for accuracy, consistency, and adherence to brand guidelines.
  • Take detailed and accurate notes during weekly team meetings, ensuring key discussion points, decisions, and action items are documented and distributed to relevant stakeholders in a timely manner.
  • Provide support in onboarding and training of new team members
  • Provide regular reports on social media performance to the department head.
  • Experiment with new content formats, tools, and technologies to keep the content fresh, engaging, and innovative.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to strict deadlines.
  • Prioritize tasks effectively to ensure timely delivery of content.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain schedule flexibility, including availability to support the team during special events, breaking news, high-traffic periods, designated holidays, and on-call shifts that may occur outside of standard schedule hours.
  • Extremely organized, detail-oriented, and able to adhere to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate well with people across departments (.com, video, marketing), at all levels of brand, and with freelancers/outside contributors.
  • Ability to problem solve and make editorial decisions.
  • Flexibility in managing multiple responsibilities and assignments simultaneously; ability to meet deadlines; experience managing both urgent, short-term projects, and complex, longer-term projects.
  • Team player with the ability to work with different personalities to optimize social media team quality.
  • Great news judgment from someone who loves and gets Black culture across the diaspora.
  • Understanding of social media best practices.
  • The ability to self-edit work.
  • A creative writer with the ability to write in a witty, fun, and trendy tone to appeal to The Shade Room demographic of 18 – 41 years old.
  • Impeccable attention to detail, solid organizational skills, highly motivated, and results-driven.
  • The ability to work in a quick-turnaround environment without sacrificing quality, accuracy or personality.
  • Experience with popular social media platforms and trends.
  • Relationship management: networking skills with the ability to cultivate strong professional relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Flexibility in managing multiple responsibilities and assignments simultaneously; ability to meet deadlines; experience managing both urgent, short-term
  • projects and complex, longer-term projects.
  • Legal right to work in the US.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:BA in English, Communications, Journalism, or related field preferred but not required. Minimum of 4+ years of professional journalism, communications, or social media experience creating content, preferably for a high-output and trusted media brand.
