Job Summary
High school-level student workers will work directly with professional RHCJC staff and university-level students on a variety of journalism-associated tasks. Work includes conducting background research on issues, setting up and conducting interviews, collecting information such as government agendas and minutes, and assisting with marketing efforts including social media. High school-level student workers will also learn technology used by the center such as video cameras and digital content management systems.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Minimum QualificationsCurrent or incoming high school junior or senior
GPA of 2.0 or above
Valid Mississippi driver's license
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Preferred QualificationsPortfolio of published work or related schoolwork
Recommendation letter from a current teacher
Essay explaining interest in RHCJC and career goals
Commitment to agreed-upon weekly hours to center duties, including availability to attend scheduled orientation/trainings.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Gather, collect and verify information for stories through interviews, observation and research for dissemination across platforms.
- Capture appropriate sound, video, still photos and other data and information types for the professional production of a variety of news products that will be delivered across platforms.
- Works closely with professional staff and university-level students on creation of RHCJC related media and projects.
- Assist with duties within the Roy Howard Community Journalism Center as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisors.

- Proficiency in news writing, including grammar and spelling
- Demonstrates knowledge of social media and other digital platforms
- Ability to understand photography, videography, and editing practices
- Ability to assimilate large amounts of data quickly and accurately
- Proficiency at posting content to various websites
- Ability to meet deadlines and work in a deadline-driven environment
- Ability to communicate effectively with those from a wide range of backgrounds, education levels, and varying skills
- Ability to effectively communicate with the public, including phone calls and face-to-face interactions
- Self-motivated and receptive to feedback
