Position Information
Texas Highways is seeking a strong editor with a digital mindset to lead our online editorial calendar and manage web publishing operations. This role is responsible for assigning, editing, producing, and optimizing digital content that reflects our signature storytelling and high editorial standards. The ideal candidate brings strong editorial and visual skills, is confident navigating a CMS, is excited to shape how our stories are presented online and is knowledgeable about the state of Texas.
This position also plays an important role in optimizing content for search. While you don’t need to be a technical SEO expert, you should be curious about how AI is changing search behaviors and willing to learn how to adapt our content structure, metadata, and backend organization to meet those changes. You’ll be supported by the Digital Strategy Manager and external vendors in exploring new tools and tactics to keep our content visible and discoverable.
This position reports directly to the Publisher; day-to-day work and strategic planning are led by the Digital Strategy Manager.

Key Responsibilities:
- Build and manage the digital editorial calendar in alignment with print content and seasonal campaigns
- Assign, edit, proof, and publish web-exclusive stories
- Recruit and manage freelance digital contributors
- Collaborate with edit and art teams on digital layout and visual storytelling
- Oversee homepage updates and story presentation, including visuals and metadata
- Monitor analytics and apply performance insights to shape content strategy
- Monitor trends in SEO and AI-generated search to inform digital content organization and discoverability strategies
- Work with Digital Strategy Manager to adapt and optimize content structure and tagging in response to evolving SEO and AI-driven search trends
- Support digital product development and editorial innovation
Detailed Job Duties:
- Content Planning & Freelance Managemen t
- Maintain a weekly/monthly editorial calendar for web aligned with print cycles
- Manage current freelance Web Editor (assign and edit stories) and source new contributors as needed
- Collaborate with Digital Strategy Manager on planning and packaging digital feature stories
- Coordinate with art team for digital layouts and image sourcing
- Print Issue Web Tasks
- Upload each issue’s department stories to the website
- Write web headlines, deks, alt text, and metadata
- Assist Digital Strategy Manager in packaging each issues’ feature content for web vendor
- Ideate with Digital Strategy Manager on presentation of major print features
- Homepage & CMS Management
- Maintain and update homepage content based on editorial priorities
- Tag stories and manage seasonal or evergreen content placement
- Collaborate with Digital Strategy Manger on vendor communication related to web performance and enhancements, including budget monitoring
- Performance Tracking & Optimization
- Maintain GA4 analytics dashboard and monitor story KPIs
- Analyze traffic trends and adjust strategy accordingly
- Research and implement SEO strategies aligned with emerging AI-search behaviors and search engine guidance
- Collaborate with Digital Strategy Manager to identify and implement structured data, internal linking improvements, and metadata strategies
- Audit and maintain back-end content structure to improve visibility in AI search summaries and answer boxes
- Digital Projects
- Write and edit digital promotional copy as needed for landing pages, campaigns, or newsletter tie-ins
- Offer editorial support on development of new digital products
- Experience: 3 years of experience in digital publishing, content editing or closely related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
- Strong editing, writing, and organizational skills
- Experience managing freelance contributors
- Proficiency with WordPress or equivalent CMS platforms
- Familiarity with evolving SEO practices in response to AI-generated search (e.g., Google SGE, ChatGPT, Perplexity)
- Strong understanding of digital content structure, metadata, and content tagging for maximum discoverability
- Working knowledge of Adobe Suite and web publishing tools
- Experience using analytics platforms (e.g., GA4) to inform content strategy
- Familiarity with Texas travel and culture is a plus
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
- Sitting - prolonged periods of time
- Fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
