Innovation Sample Creator

This is a fully onsite role based out of our HQ in Portland, OR. In-office expectation is 5 days a week.

The Innovation Sample Creator is responsible for hands-on construction of prototype apparel and equipment to support product innovation and research initiatives. This includes patterning, cutting, sewing, and finishing samples using a variety of advanced techniques and materials. The role focuses on translating early-stage concepts into functional prototypes for technical outdoor products such as rain jackets, insulated garments, knit tops, backpacks, etc. The Sample Creator will collaborate with designers, developers, and engineers to build and refine samples that drive testing, and validation of next-generation products built for active people.

How You'll Make a Difference

  • Apply deep expertise in patterning, cutting, sewing, and finishing to translate early product concepts into real-world samples.
  • Interpret sketches, CADs, and technical specifications to pattern, cut, sew, and finish high-performance prototypes.
  • Operate and maintain industrial sewing equipment, seam-sealing machines, cutting machines, and other specialized tools.
  • Utilize a wide range of stitching and bonding techniques, including coverstitch, flatlock, interlock, and modern bonding methods.
  • Work across a wide array of technical materials including waterproof-breathable laminates, insulations, stretch knits, foams, etc.
  • Collaborate with Design, Product Development, Materials, and R&D teams to creatively problem solve, refine construction methods and improve build outcomes.

You Have

  • 5+ years of experience in garment creation, sample making, or prototype construction within the outdoor, ski, performance, or other technical apparel space required. Experience in both technical outerwear and high performance sportswear strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience building complex, high-quality samples with minimal direction.
  • Experience working in innovation, product development, or R&D environments is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with patterning software (e.g., Gerber, Lectra, Browzwear) is a plus.
  • Portfolio or photos of previous sample work required as a part of application.
  • Advanced technical skills in garment and soft goods patterning, cutting, and sewing.
  • Proficiency with industrial sewing machines, seam sealers, cutting tools, and other fabrication equipment.
  • Strong understanding of stitching techniques (e.g., coverstitch, flatlock, interlock) and various bonding methods.
  • Familiarity with technical trims and closures, including zippers, snaps, buttons, seam tape, and hardware integration into soft goods
  • Ability to troubleshoot construction issues and adapt techniques to meet performance or design requirements.
  • High attention to detail and ability to maintain a clean, organized, and efficient sample workspace.
  • Strong written communication skills for documenting construction methods and creating operation sheets.
  • Creative mindset with a passion for making and innovating through hands-on development.
