General Statement of Duties
The Music Therapist is responsible for providing a broad range of clinical services to patients at Moody Neuro, including implementing a comprehensive Music Therapy program. This involves assessing and treating the effects of illness or disability to improve functioning and independence across cognitive, social, emotional, behavioral, and physical domains. The Music Therapist programs and implements activities aligned with patient goals, serves as an interdisciplinary team member, coordinates with other therapy staff, attends team and staff meetings, and completes discharge planning. The therapist is responsible for timely, organized, and clear documentation and communication regarding services. Developing and maintaining relationships with other professionals and community agencies is also essential. The therapist upholds the organization’s mission, philosophy, and goals while maintaining strict confidentiality of all personnel and patient data.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Completes Music Therapy assessments and provides written summaries.
- Provides verbal feedback to patients, families, referral sources, and care team members about evaluation results and recommendations.
- Develops appropriate treatment goals and plans accordingly.
- Delivers a variety of music therapy activities to meet patients' social, cognitive, language, emotional, and physical needs in individual and group settings.
- Maintains accurate records of sessions and progress.
- Develops, implements, and coordinates specialized program activities.
- Communicates patient progress during weekly rounds and through written reports.
- Completes discharge paperwork and makes referrals as needed.
- Follows behavioral contract guidelines as necessary.
- Assists in the daily operations of the department.
- Builds and maintains relationships with peers, professionals, and community contacts.
- Works collaboratively with all departments to address therapy needs.
- Supervises and evaluates interns when applicable.
- Participates in meetings and process improvement activities.
- Performs other duties, including leisure skills screenings and activities, on or off campus.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Graduation from an accredited college with a degree in music therapy principles/techniques and psychology.
- Proficiency in accompanying oneself and others on various instruments.
- Ability to sing/play a variety of songs.
- Knowledge of brain injury effects and music therapy methods.
- Ability to evaluate and communicate therapy effects.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to acquire necessary licensing and certification.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to relate well to individuals with disabilities.
Education
Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Arts in Music Therapy with Neurologic Music Therapy Certification. Licensed by the Certification Board for Music Therapists.
Experience
Preferred at least one year of experience working with adults with brain injuries.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
Includes standing, walking, twisting, climbing, lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, and prolonged sitting. Lifting requirements vary from 2 to over 50 pounds. The role may involve working in various environments, including outdoor, wet, or chemically contaminated areas, and operating vehicles. Visual and communication skills are essential for effective performance.
Additional Requirements
- Ability to express and understand ideas, interpret visual information, and perform basic math.
- Regular attendance and punctuality are required.
