Introduction
The State of Maryland is seeking professionals with Human Service Program experience to fill Unemployment Insurance (UI) roles – specifically, as a UI Professional III (intermediate), UI Professional II (beginner), and UI Professional I (trainee). Human Service Program experience includes: Food Assistance, Medical Assistance, Childcare Assistance (Headstart), Disability Assistance, TCA, Family Support, Child Protection, Homelessness Support, Disaster Relief Programs, Job Coach/Assistance Agencies, Substance Abuse and Behavioral Disorder Counselors, Healthcare and Mental Health Programs, Mental Health Centers, Community Health Centers, etc. You can select which role(s) to apply for; applying for all three is encouraged if interested. All roles are telework eligible, generally allowing 2-3 days remote work per week. The full telework policy is available through this link.
GRADE
Grade 14: UI Professional III, $58,428 - $90,709/year
Grade 13: UI Professional II, $54,886 - $84,995/year
Grade 12: UI Professional I, $51,580 - $79,673/year
LOCATION
Baltimore City, MD
POSITION DUTIES
Duties include conducting interviews with unemployment insurance applicants, ensuring high-quality customer service, applying laws and regulations impartially, and resolving claim issues. Specific responsibilities include reviewing claim histories, investigating fraud, providing information about benefits, explaining laws, handling complex interstate claims, and verifying claim accuracy.
Role
The roles differ by level of work and supervision: UI Professional III (intermediate, moderate supervision), UI Professional II (beginner, close supervision), UI Professional I (trainee, close supervision). None supervise others.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates need relevant experience or education. For example, UI Professional III requires 6 years in a Human Service Program or a combination of education and experience. UI Professional II requires 4.5 years, and UI Professional I requires 4 years. Substitutions with graduate credits are possible. Specific experience with federal or state employment is preferred.
Additional Requirements
Candidates must pass background checks, including criminal and unemployment overpayment checks, and must have access to federal tax information.
