Position Summary

This Graduate Assistant position involves working in the Academic Support Center (Writing and Tutoring Centers) at Avila University. The position will be approximately 7.5 hours per week (for 3 credit hour tuition remission per semester) during the 2025-2026 academic year (both Spring and Fall).

Responsibilities:

  • Work with students on an individual and/or small group basis to improve skill levels in specific contentbased classes, including explanations of class work.
  • Provide consultation on writing assignments including assignment development, research, audience, Style Manual (e.g. APA, MLA) requirements and other questions as needed. (NOTE: May not be required of all GAs as per Director of Academic Support Services)
  • Provide an opportunity to answer questions that students may have about material presented in class.
  • Conduct classroom workshops/presentations or small group instruction for faculty as requested.
  • Provide administrative support to Director of Academic Support Services as needed.
  • Develop a personal learning relationship with students.
  • Encourage and instruct students in good study habits and ethical use of AI.
  • Refer students to other appropriate services for assistance and information, e.g. Student Advising, Counseling Services, Career Services etc.
  • Use Navigate accurately for scheduling, logging students in for walkin appointments, and documentation as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Review and evaluate how students are progressing on a regular basis and consult with the Student Advising, other peer tutors and Director as needed.
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings and training sessions.

Qualifications:

  • Must be admitted and enrolled in a graduate program at Avila University. International students are not eligible for graduate assistantships.
  • Familiarity with and proficiency in courses tutored, indicated by a grade of B or better.
  • Ability to determine the needs of students and present material in an understandable way.
  • Desire to assist students in learning material and achieving success.
  • Overall grade point average at 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Evidence of ability to communicate effectively and knowledgeably with a wide variety of people.
  • Tutoring or teaching experience preferred.
