Overview
Avila University's School of Performing Arts is seeking dynamic and experienced adjunct faculty to join our team in providing high-quality instruction in various music and theatre courses. Contracted on a per-semester basis, these positions will provide direct instruction to students by teaching classes, developing course outlines, assessing student progress, and utilizing the University’s assigned technology to maintain appropriate records.
Theatre courses include subjects such as Stage Combat, Stagecraft, Acting, Script Analysis, Directing Principles, Dramatic Theory & Criticism, Stage Lighting, Costume Techniques, Sound Engineering, and various advanced topics in acting, directing, and theatre design. Music courses encompass Applied Voice and Piano, Music Theory, Music History, Conducting, Orchestration, Compositional Techniques, Diction, and various performance ensembles such as Avila Singers and University Singers. The program also offers interdisciplinary courses.
Responsibilities
- Provide instruction in assigned theatre or music courses, including lectures, applied lessons, and interdisciplinary classes.
- Develop and implement course outlines and lesson plans that align with curriculum and learning objectives.
- Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback.
- Provide guidance and coaching (vocal, instrumental, dance, movement, intimacy, stage combat, etc.) in assigned music or theatre co-curricular projects/productions.
- Deliver content using effective methods appropriate for students with differing abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experiences.
- Conduct all class sessions according to the assigned schedule (in-person and/or online).
- Collaborate with other faculty members, the program Chair, and Production Managers to enhance the learning experience.
- Engage in professional development activities to stay current in the field.
- Perform other duties related to assigned courses as needed.
- Remote appointments possible depending on course needs and at the discretion of the Dean.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher in a specific discipline relevant to teaching responsibilities or a Master’s degree in another area with 18 credit hours of discipline graduate coursework from an accredited university/college.
- Demonstrated expertise in the relevant subject areas (Musical Theatre, Stage Direction, Lighting or Sound Design/engineering, Theatre or Music History, Choral Conducting, Global Music Appreciation, String Lessons, Voice, Piano, Guitar, etc.).
- Teaching experience with a diverse population (preferred).
- Experience with a Learning Management System such as Canvas (preferred).
- Multilingual skills highly preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a diverse and inclusive environment.
- Commitment to contributing to a climate that supports a diverse student body, serves first-generation college students, multilingual learners, and contributes to equity and social justice through their work.
Compensation and Community
Stipend based on the credit hours assigned and previous teaching experience. Kansas City is a two-state metropolitan area offering a wide variety of cultural, educational and social opportunities.
