The Senior Technical Writer provides expert documentation and content development support for the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP), a U.S. Department of Energy initiative that helps federal agencies achieve energy efficiency and resilience goals. FEMP provides technical expertise, tools, training, and project support to advance efficient energy adoption, reduce costs, and enhance mission readiness across the federal government. This role ensures that complex technical, policy, and programmatic information is translated into clear, accessible, and user-friendly documentation that supports FEMP’s mission and stakeholder engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical Documentation: Develop, write, and edit high-quality technical documents, including reports, user manuals, standard operating procedures, fact sheets, training materials, and program guidance.
  • Content Simplification: Translate technical, engineering, and policy-driven content into concise and accessible language tailored for diverse audiences, including federal stakeholders, policymakers, and the public.
  • Compliance and Standards: Ensure all written products adhere to DOE standards, Section 508 accessibility requirements, and federal style guidelines.
  • Collaboration with SMEs: Partner with engineers, analysts, program managers, and subject matter experts to gather accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Knowledge Management: Create and maintain templates, style guides, and standardized formats to promote consistency across FEMP communications and technical outputs.
  • Quality Assurance: Review and edit documents for grammar, clarity, tone, and technical accuracy before publication or distribution.
  • Training and Support: Assist in the development of training materials and provides guidance to junior technical writers and editors to ensure high-quality deliverables.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, English, Communications, Engineering, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 6-8 years of experience in technical writing, with at least 3 years supporting federal programs or energy-related initiatives.
  • Proven expertise in producing user manuals, technical reports, SOPs, and training content for government or technical audiences.
  • Strong ability to interview subject matter experts and translate complex data into accessible, plain-language documentation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and familiarity with content management systems.
  • Experience with document layout and desktop publishing software (e.g., Adobe InDesign, FrameMaker) preferred.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with strong editing, grammar, and formatting skills.
  • Prior knowledge of DOE and FEMP programs strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with federal accessibility requirements (Section 508) and style guides (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style, AP Stylebook, or DOE guidelines).
