Description

The City of Livermore is currently accepting applications for Librarian I with the Livermore Public Library in Teen Services. This position may be filled at either level I or II, based on the level of experience of the candidate. Definition

Under supervision, provides information services to the public; and performs other duties as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the entry level position in the professional Librarian series. Entry into this class requires experience or education related to library or information science. With experience, the work becomes progressively more diversified and difficult, requiring independent judgment under general supervision.

Supervision Received

Initially direct supervision progressing to more general supervision which is provided by a Supervising Librarian or Assistant Library Director.

Supervision Exercised

May provide direction to Library Aides, Library Clerks, Library Assistants, volunteers, and temporary employees in their assignments and work prioritization.

Examples of Important and Essential Functions

  • Answers inquiries from the general public or interested parties; assists patrons in the selection of appropriate reading and serves as resource person in area of specialty; assists in information transfer utilizing all available media and sources through service at a public desk; assists in maintaining order and discipline in the observance of library rules and regulations; performs routine statistical work; reports on progress of assigned work or any suggested change in the manner of performance of assigned duties; and may be assigned to work in an age level program, a specialized program, or at the information desk.
  • Communicates effectively with the public and co-workers, promoting good customer relations; assists library patrons with inquiries and daily library business in a professional manner; encourages a positive customer service attitude; works with volunteers; and attends meetings as needed.
  • Uses computers for internet research, specialized library software, databases, word processing, spreadsheets, and operation of specialized equipment such as microfilm readers.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of library science theory, reference materials, research techniques, library automation, age-level programming, and effective communication and training techniques.
  • Instructs patrons, retrieves information, organizes work, operates library equipment, and plans programs like children’s activities, outreach, or reference services.
  • Possesses the ability to apply knowledge and skills in daily duties, interpret written materials, and relate effectively to others.
  • Minimum qualifications include a Master’s degree in Library Science or related field; or a Bachelor’s degree with three years of professional librarian experience; or equivalent experience, education, and training.
