Coordinator, Writing and Speaking Program
Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of the Writing and Speaking Programs, the Coordinator manages undergraduate and graduate fellows by providing administrative and instructional support; oversees administrative functions of the Writing and Speaking Fellows Program. The Coordinator organizes each Programs’ calendar of events, manages the Programs’ budget with the Director of the Writing Program, and assists in training Fellows by attending both training courses and providing teaching assistance. The Coordinator works closely with undergraduate Fellows to develop programming that engages and supports students and that ensures the needs of Fellows are met. The Coordinator is the liaison between the Programs and alumnae and helps to organize events during the semester and reunion for alumni to remain connected to current Fellows and the Programs. This is a full-time and year-round position.
Job Description
Essential Duties:
- Coordinate with professors, deans, and staff members to attach Writing Fellows or Speaking Fellows to courses and other work opportunities during the academic year and summer;
- Plan and coordinate Writing and Speaking Center events including but not limited to Writing Fellow Large Group Meetings, Speaking Fellow Friday Meetings, Susan Ratner events, TEDx, end-of-semester gatherings. Support undergraduate initiatives to carry out projects within the Writing and Speaking Centers.
- Coordinate daily operations of the Writing and Speaking Centers including but not limited to: managing department email inboxes; reconciling expenses; faculty and student outreach; managing Writing, Science, Speaking, and Graduate Fellow listservs; coordinating class visits and tabling; creating recruitment schedule and running recruitment program for new Fellows; advertising the Center through social media, flyering, and email lists; creating promotional material for the center and updating brochures; addressing Fellow, student, and faculty questions and concerns; meeting with Fellows, students, and faculty as needed
- Develop and implement workshops or programming for continued training and professional development of Writing and Speaking Fellows;
- Conduct outreach to other colleges and universities with similar programs to develop Barnard’s own and represent Barnard at conferences;
- Maintain alumnae connections and facilitate interactions between Programs’ Alumnae and current Programs’ Fellows;
- Mentor Writing and Speaking Fellows and foster community among the Fellows by organizing small-group meetings and other staff development or community building projects;
- Hire and manage student employment logistics of Fellows such as: creating job descriptions, hiring Fellows on Workday, coordinating with Beyond Barnard to ensure Fellows submit paperwork for employment, managing Workday logistics for student employment;
- Collaborate with Alumnae Affairs and Development to identify and then pursue additional sources of funding, i.e. grants and alumnae donations;
- includes planning and organizing alumnae events and
- summer reunion
- Provide teaching support for The Writer’s Process (training course for Writing Fellows) and Rhetorical Choices (training course for Speaking Fellows) and work with individual students as a tutor when needed;
- With Director, monitor financial status of Programs’ budgets (includes keeping inventory of office supplies and overseeing student salaries) and assume spending authority to acquire items or services necessary for the Program;
- With Director, assist in constructing and submitting yearly budget narrative and advocating budgetary needs;
- Prepare materials for annual reports on both Programs.
- Work closely with the Science Fellow Coordinator to coordinate programming for undergraduate and graduate Science Fellows;
- Maintain the Writing and Speaking Programs’ websites for the College;
- Making purchases, coordinating catering for events, and reconciling expenses for the Centers
- Facilitate communication between Fellows and between Fellows and professors;
- Support Director as needed;
- Hire, supervise and support graduate Fellows.
Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree
- Experience with a Writing Fellows Program (Barnard Writing Fellows preferred).
- Excellent communication and written skills.
- Highly developed organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently in order to complete all tasks without continual supervision
- Ability to multitask and manage several ongoing projects at once
- 12-month position, full-time, 35 hours per week
- This job is currently a hybrid position and may require a presence in the office up to five times a week, including for team and full staff meetings and other times as directed by the supervisor.
- This is a Non-Exempt position.
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
