Casual Communications Officer In-Training - Emergency Management - Goldendale, WA - Non-Exempt - Casual- Non-Benefited - Salary set by the Union, Step 1, $24.47/ Hr. Open until filled.
Receives and prioritizes emergency and non-emergency calls from the public and dispatches appropriate police, fire, or emergency units when needed. Monitors units in the field and operates multi-frequency radio equipment, computer terminals, and data recording equipment to retrieve, enter, receive, and transmit law enforcement and public safety information.
- Receives and evaluates incoming emergency calls, requesting medical information, geographic locations, or other pertinent data to dispatch appropriate units or provide necessary information to agencies.
- Provides information and assistance to the public, referring complaints and reports to patrol deputies or command personnel. Responsible for making outgoing calls proactively and as directed.
- Ensures thorough and accurate information collection to facilitate proper action. Has a basic knowledge of criminal and civil law.
- Operates computer, radio, telephone, paging systems, tape recorders, and related communication equipment. Responsible for adhering to FCC radio procedures.
- Within six months, becomes certified on ACCESS/WACIC computer consoles to inquire and enter law enforcement data, such as vehicle registration, criminal records, warrants, and stolen property.
- Maintains logs of all radio transmissions, phone calls, and actions taken, ensuring accurate record-keeping. Capable of spelling and composing comprehensive statements.
- Prepares complaint forms reflecting the nature of complaints with relevant details to aid law enforcement agencies.
- Monitors the activity and location of police, fire, and emergency units, maintaining radio contact and knowing the whereabouts of all officers in the field. Anticipates potential dangers and responds calmly and efficiently.
- Relays and receives critical information between units and agencies, coordinating efforts across different jurisdictions and departments.
- Assists walk-in traffic at the counter, taking complaint information and directing individuals to appropriate agencies.
- Performs clerical duties such as typing reports, filing records, and other administrative tasks.
- Performs other duties as assigned, including knowledge of local public agencies, law enforcement principles, medical first aid, local geography, map reading, and operating communication equipment with clarity and professionalism.
- Possesses the ability to evaluate, prioritize, and act on routine and emergency requests, handle multiple situations simultaneously, and maintain accurate records.
- Requires a high school diploma or G.E.D., and preferably one year of experience in emergency or health services, law enforcement, or related fields involving emergency communication.
