Overview
The mission of the Charles Waddell Chesnutt Library is to support the University in its educational, research, and cultural endeavors through careful selection, acquisition, organization, and interpretation of information resources. In addition, the Chesnutt Library assumes its unique role as a significant cultural resource for the community and the region at large.
Primary Purpose of the Position
The Reference and Outreach Librarian works collaboratively with the Head of Public Services and other library personnel to implement and develop library reference services, outreach services, library instructions, collection development, and other library initiatives. The Reference and Outreach Librarian delivers responsive and innovative information and outreach services in support of the library, actively building relationships with faculty, researchers, staff, and students. The Reference and Outreach Librarian will collaborate with faculty, university departments and staff in the library to design holistic co-curricular learning experiences and outreach programs for students and the university community. The Reference and Outreach Librarian will participate in the planning, development, and assessment of the library’s holistic co-curricular learning experiences and outreach programs.
Responsibilities
- Perform general and in-depth reference and research consultations, which include face-to-face, small groups, telephone, and email to the University Community and academic departments, as well as outside the campus community.
- Provide an engaging, approachable, and service-oriented experience to library patrons at the public services desk.
- Establish and maintain regular outreach and communications. Keeps faculty and students informed about the new resources available in the library collection, helps patrons build their technology proficiency, and participates in the library collection development and instructions.
- Provide programming that promotes students’ acquisition of library research and information literacy skills and faculty integration of information literacy instruction into their courses.
- Plan and develop the Library’s holistic co-curricular learning experiences and outreach programs.
- Plan and develop assessment for the Library’s holistic co-curricular learning experiences and outreach programs.
- Plan and develop library displays in coordination with library outreach, programs and events.
- Contribute to the Library’s ongoing efforts to develop inclusive collections and services that support equitable access for a diverse university community.
- Develop library outreach materials to build and foster relationships to promote library services.
- Serve on library and University committees; participate in professional development activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- The work schedule may include evenings and weekends.
Minimum Education and Experience
- MLS from an ALA-accredited program at an accredited institution or higher education.
- Experience working in access services (Circulation) operation in a library.
- Experience with an OCLC WMS system.
- Relevant Library and supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Reference experience in an academic library.
- Knowledge of emerging trends in academic libraries.
- Familiarity with academic research resources and tools.
- Experience with outreach and programming.
