Overview
The Library Assistant is dedicated to providing excellent customer service and ensuring a welcoming experience for patrons of the Library of Engineering and Science and its partner libraries. In this role, you will prioritize the needs of internal and external customers—answering questions and offering assistance in person, by phone, or electronically. You will guide patrons in finding and effectively using information resources, technology, online catalogs, and databases, and help locate materials as needed.
Responsibilities
- Provide excellent customer service to patrons of the Library of Engineering and Science and its partner libraries, ensuring a welcoming environment.
- Answer questions and assist patrons in person, by phone, or electronically; guide them in finding and using information resources, technology, online catalogs, and databases, and help locate materials.
- Manage collections and inventory through an online library management system; keep records of building usage, patron questions, and assistance provided for ongoing assessment.
- Support and help train student assistants; communicate with the supervisor and provide coverage during planned staff absences or emergencies.
- As a member of the 3D printing team, assist users with file setup, troubleshooting, and printing; maintain a safe and secure environment and report issues to supervisors or relevant personnel.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED; three years library or public service experience required.
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively to provide service in a diverse work environment and community; strong customer service and interpersonal skills; excellent written and oral communication; well-organized with attention to detail and ability to concentrate on one task over a period of time.
- Enthusiasm for learning about and using information technologies; able to work under pressure with frequent interruptions; ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment; sound judgment and ability to work independently and with others.
- Library competencies include adaptability, communication, continuous improvement, cross-functional perspective, initiative/judgment, self-development/continuous learning, service orientation and work standards; reference skills/research experience desired; experience with 3D printing desired but not required.
