The Director of Communications works for the City Council President and leads the Office of the Council President’s communications department to deliver an effective communications platform across media domains: traditional media, social media, email, etc. They will have an understanding and vision for capitalizing on social media trends and an evolving media landscape. They are responsible for developing and executing strategies to generate positive press coverage; managing a robust digital engagement calendar and creating written and visual content to engage and inform City residents. The Director of Communications also collaborates across departments to support the Office’s legislative, oversight, community, and Council-wide goals. This role requires creativity, a positive attitude, and sound discretion. Essential Functions

Advises, organizes, and executes all facets of earned media events and other activities. Develops, manages, and executes communications strategies for hearings and other Council President campaigns. Drafts, reviews and approves external-facing communications items from communications staff including speeches, press releases, emails, opening statements, social media posts. Manage high-level press relationships and supervise and support junior communications staff in strengthening press relationships. Creates talking points and communications guidance for principal and staff. Manages and executes social media content strategy. Maintains databases of press outlets and contact information. Manages database of press clips. Regularly updates and maintains the City Council website. Manages email engagement. Advises and trains internal teams on best practices for earned media efforts and press events. Creates tool boxes and training materials for a variety of earned media tactics. Creates and maintains toolkits of approved content. Supports individual Councilmember offices as needed and directed. Conceives, reviews and approves of visual storytelling collateral including graphics and videos. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications

Education:

A bachelor’s degree in communications, political science or a related field. At least six years of demonstrated growth of communications experience. Demonstrated experience managing communications staff and programming. OR Equivalency Notes:

Have an equivalent combination of education and experience. Non-supervisory experience or education may not be substituted for the required supervisory experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Skills and Abilities:

Strong written and verbal communications skills Demonstrated ability to drive press outcomes Significant experience working with Facebook, X, Instagram and other social media platforms Ability to conceive of or produce compelling video and graphic content

BACKGROUND CHECK : Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint screening and must be successfully completed.
