Overview
The Director, Marketing Innovation – Surgical Solutions is a leadership role within the BD Surgery Business Unit, focused on upstream marketing for new product innovation in Biosurgery and Infection Prevention. The role partners with the VP/GM to develop and deliver the innovation strategy (organic and inorganic) to drive short- and long-term growth, with a focus on reducing surgical complications through innovative technologies and services for healthcare providers and patients.
Responsibilities
Leads and upskills the team on standard processes and key takeaways related to new product development
Helps establish the short-term and long-term direction and strategies for the platform, in collaboration with Platform and Regional leadership
Demonstrates a deep understanding of the phase-gate new product development process, front-end innovation to launch, including gathering and categorizing unmet needs, formulating target product profiles (TPP), and developing evidence-generation plans to deliver on the TPP
Skilled at gathering market intelligence and trends, technology development, current and emerging clinical needs, and white-space opportunities; conducts competitive scenario planning to model potential responses and impact
Conducts market research in a variety of methodologies (technologies, procedures, competitive positions, pricing, segmentation, positioning, etc.) with emphasis on mapping patient journeys and clinical pathways through surgical procedure observations
Supports the analysis of market research to develop a comprehensive New Product Development (NPD) strategy and the validation of user needs to support a commercialization plan
Leads identification and selection of the most promising business innovation opportunities (organic and inorganic) for the platform
Partners and collaborates with regional business leaders, R&D, Medical Affairs, Business Development, and other functions to ensure development and execution of key early-stage and GPDS innovation projects
Prepares and presents new business opportunities to senior leaders based on detailed financial analysis, market opportunity, revenue potential, IP, and technological assessment
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
BS/BA in business, science, marketing, or health care
MBA with concentration in marketing or finance preferred
Minimum of 10 years of experience in product and/or market management
Track record of delivering on strategic and financial objectives in roles of increasing responsibility
Experience in developing and driving innovation initiatives
Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams; experience managing direct reports is ideal
Medical device industry experience
Skilled at business and financial analysis
Strategic problem solver with a growth mindset and strong influencing skills
Highly self-motivated, execution- and results-focused leader capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment and shaping the strategic direction of the business
Methodical and structured in approach to work, ensuring consistency and reliability
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
Strong action orientation with the ability to prioritize and multi-task to balance diverse business needs
Highly analytical with the ability to follow market dynamics and identify key growth opportunities

Ability to make recommendations to senior leaders based on financial opportunity, IP, clinical need, risk assessment, and potential for short- and long-term revenue
Excellent communication, interpersonal and persuasion skills; ability to influence and inspire across diverse business and technical subject areas
Creative and results-oriented problem solver with a logical basis for recommendations
Good understanding of P&L, distribution channels, and go-to-market strategies
Ability to motivate and positively influence team performance
Ability to travel approximately 25%
