The KMBC 9 / KCWE 29 Internship Program is a paid, rigorous and highly competitive hands-on experience that provides individuals with the opportunity to learn about the operations of a broadcast television station. As a Sports Intern, you’ll learn how a newsroom plans, produces, and delivers sports content across broadcast and other platforms in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

What you’ll do:

  • Assist with coverage of local and professional teams, high school and college sports, and community events
  • Log games and practices; transcribe sound; cut highlights and VO/SOTs for broadcast and digital
  • Support field shoots
  • Build graphics/lower thirds; update score bugs and tickers; help prep scripts and slates
  • Monitor wires, social feeds, and pressers; clip and publish content 
  • Research story ideas, stats, and trends; help build rundowns and segment plans
  • Write and edit short scripts, web stories, and social captions under guidance from producer

What we’re looking for:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in journalism, communications, film/media, sports management, or related; rising junior+ preferred
  • Strong sports knowledge – local, pro, and college; comfort with box scores, stats, and storylines
  • Clear writing skills (AP style a plus) and strong attention to detail under deadline
  • Basic video editing skills (Adobe Premier or similar) and comfort with newsroom workflows
  • Team-oriented, proactive, and coachable; able to lift 25 lbs and stand for extended periods during shoots

Your first day at the station is set aside for orientation which Must be attended.  Plan to work one to two days a week, eight hours each shift with varying schedules.  During your internship you should always check in with your assigned advisor upon entering the building. In-person attendance is required.
