Overview

The primary function of an employee in this class is to support the educational environment of an elementary school by directing the operation and services of the school library as well as providing instructional support in classrooms designated as overcrowded. Key responsibilities include teaching students basic library skills and how to use print and electronic resources, developing and maintaining a balanced resource collection and accurate catalog/circulation records, facilitating interlibrary loan transactions, and assisting the principal in supervising the Library Assistant/Elementary position and directing volunteers. In addition, the employee provides assistance to other duties as assigned to help ensure student learning in a school setting. The primary duties of the position are performed in both library and classroom environments.

Hours and Salary

Hours: 37.5

Salary: $16.00

Requirements

Paraprofessionals Must Meet One Of The Following Qualifications

  • Have 2 years of college credits or
  • Have a college degree or
  • Pass the ParaPro Praxis Assessment with a score of 457 or higher or the Idaho Paraprofessional Testing Alternative with a score of 75% or higher.

Idaho Paraprofessional Testing Alternative testing dates are offered at the school district throughout the year to West Ada Paraprofessional applicants. The test should be passed within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises operation of and provides the services of an elementary school library; presents information to students according to district library curriculum; orders, catalogs and processes materials; maintains library catalog and circulation records; performs related work as required.
  • Directs library operations and supports the principal in supervising the Library Assistant/Elementary position and volunteers.
  • Instructs students in basic library functions and information technology skills; uses web-based library catalog; teaches care of books, library location skills, listening skills, and story elements.
  • Prepares and follows lesson plans according to District K-5 library instruction curriculum; monitors student progress in library and information skills.
  • Checks materials and AV equipment in and out; facilitates interlibrary loan transactions.
  • Maintains MARC and copy records; assists with selection and maintenance of library materials; weeds as needed.
  • Inventories and performs minor maintenance on library materials and equipment; maintains a neat library; develops displays.
  • Supervises special library events; trains and supervises aides, student assistants, and volunteers; collects fines.
  • Performs duties in accordance with district policies, procedures, and safety practices.

Other Duties

  • Performs teacher assistant, lunchroom, playground, bus, and other monitoring duties as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic library functions, operations, and objectives; classroom management.
  • Operation and maintenance of standard office equipment and AV equipment.
  • Computer use, including email, Internet, word processing, spreadsheets, and file management.

Ability To

  • Follow oral and written instructions and observe District policies and procedures.
  • Operate and maintain an elementary school library; establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, staff, and other district personnel.
  • Implement lesson plans based on district library curriculum, present information to students, and manage a classroom.
  • Manage web-based cataloging, circulation, and search database systems; use electronic resources and web-based utilities.
  • Operate library and school AV equipment; communicate effectively; perform multiple tasks and manage time effectively; meet deadlines; demonstrate integrity and ingenuity.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Library, classroom, computer, or other instructional experience preferred; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Essential Physical Abilities

  • Clear speech and hearing; visual acuity; manual dexterity; mobility; ability to lift at least 30 pounds and handle book carts.

Evaluation

Yearly by supervisor.
