Overview PlayCV is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to bring fun and enriching after-school classes, programs, camps and activities to TK - 8th grade students. All programs take place onsite at Castro Valley Unified School District elementary or middle schools. PlayCV aims to foster team and individual growth and the development of social interactions through enrichment programs.

PlayCV is proud to offer an extensive Theater Arts program. The organization creates a Musical Theater Performance class each school year and is committed to providing high-quality, engaging theater education to elementary and middle school students to inspire creativity, build confidence, and foster a love for the performing arts.

Position Summary PlayCV is seeking a passionate and experienced Musical Director to join the team for the 2025/26 school year. The role involves teaching, or co-teaching, the Musical Theater Performance class.

Expected Time Commitment:

8-10 hours per week, Monday through Thursday late afternoons.

Timeline Commitment:

October – January.

Responsibilities

Planning & Preparation: Attend an introductory planning meeting with the producers prior to the start of the program. Prepare, or assist with preparing, and organize all necessary materials for the classes.

Instruction: Direct a 30 minute to 1 hour MTI KIDS or Jr. production. Blend MTI provided resources, PlayCV resources, and your own creative vision while staying within MTI contract requirements. Teach acting technique, create choreography and blocking, support music learning and implement creative use of props and background sets.

Student Supervision: Oversee and direct students; maintain a positive and productive learning environment and ensure student safety during classes. Accompany and support students backstage during tech rehearsals and performances.

Show Production: Assist in the creative planning and execution of the final production.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Minimum of 6 months experience working with school-aged students in an instructional setting.

Entry level role designed to support introduction to theater arts production and career growth.

Experience in directing performance, acting or stage management with a basic understanding of musical theater and the production process.

High School diploma or GED; a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre or a related field is a plus. Commensurate experience will be considered.

Ability to manage school-aged students with patience and appropriate guidance; able to maintain composure in a high-energy environment.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and resolve problems creatively and proactively.

Background in dance or choir is a plus; bilingual candidates are a plus.

Must be available for all class and final show dates.
