Overview

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is hiring for a YPL/Children's Services Librarian at the West Las Vegas Library. This is a full-time, FLSA-exempt position.

Base pay range

$70,980.00/yr - $95,120.54/yr

Essential duties & responsibilities

  • Provides children’s reference and other services to children, young adults, and adult patrons, using the library catalog, databases, and automated systems to locate information or materials.
  • Assists patrons in the use of Children’s Services collections and materials, including Library of Congress classifications and non-book materials.
  • Maintains knowledge of children’s services and exercises sound decision-making.
  • Assists with collection development activities, including reading reviews, ordering materials, and weeding.
  • Maintains the Children’s Services Department reference and circulating collections and ensures compliance with district, branch, and department policies.
  • Maintains the calendar of programs, activities, and events for the YPL/Children’s Services Department.
  • Prepares and conducts story hours and programs for children up to 18 years old, and programs for adults related to children’s services.
  • Provides information about district-wide activities, facilities, and services; interacts with patrons, staff, and external partners.
  • Confers with teachers, parents, and community groups to plan, organize, and implement programs and exhibits to promote reading and patronage.
  • Conducts tours of the YPL/Children’s Services Department for educators, students, schools, day care centers, and other groups.
  • Visits schools and community organizations to promote books and reading.
  • Performs shelf maintenance to ensure accurate shelf order and accessibility of materials.
  • Decorates and arranges displays; maintains records and reports for the YPL/Children’s Services Department.
  • Utilizes computers, library systems, the Internet, and other resources; operates standard library and office equipment.
  • Attends meetings and training; maintains a safe environment for staff and patrons.
  • Serves as “Person-in-Charge” as needed and participates in outreach and committee work.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education
Required: Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited college or university.

Experience
Required: Coursework in children’s literature or children’s services and experience retrieving information from electronic resources.

Licenses & Certifications
Required: Valid Nevada Driver’s License (or ability to obtain); PIC training within 12 months of hire; AED/CPR certification within six months of employment (to be maintained).

Physical requirements

Likely to involve standing and walking, light to moderate lifting, bending, reaching, keyboard use, and long periods of sitting or standing. Visual and auditory capabilities required for safe and effective service.

Hours, benefits and schedule

The position is full-time (40 hours/week). The schedule may include varied hours; Saturday through Friday shifts with posted hours are noted in the posting. Available benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance; Nevada PERS; 14 paid holidays plus 1 floating holiday; paid vacation and sick time; tuition reimbursement.
