Hours: 3 days per week, 6.0 hours/day, 18 hours per week; 39 weeks per school year; Up to 25 additional hours annually for meetings, special events, and professional obligations

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Music Therapist supports the emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and social needs of middle school students through structured, evidence-based music interventions. The therapist provides direct services in both individual and group formats, aligned with student needs, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and school-wide social-emotional initiatives.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct music therapy assessments and develop individualized treatment plans tailored to student strengths and needs.
  • Deliver music therapy services to students, focusing on areas such as emotional regulation, communication, social skills, attention, and self-expression.
  • Facilitate both individual and small group sessions, with a focus on students receiving special education or social-emotional support services.
  • Collaborate with teachers, school counselors, psychologists, and other staff to integrate therapeutic strategies into student routines.
  • Document all services, progress, and session outcomes in compliance with IEP goals and district standards. Provide year end report.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, team planning meetings, and student support discussions to share observations and inform decision-making.
  • Design and implement music-based programming aligned with trauma-informed, inclusive practices.
  • Provide occasional staff consultation and contribute to professional development related to music therapy and student wellness.
  • Engage in school events or community-building activities that promote positive school climate and student well-being.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Music Therapy from an AMTA-approved program
  • Current certification as a Board-Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC)
  • Experience working with middle school-aged students in educational or clinical settings
  • Understanding of IEP processes, special education services, and trauma-informed approaches
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience supporting students with autism, ADHD, emotional/behavioral disorders, or developmental disabilities
  • Familiarity with SEL frameworks and restorative practices
  • Bilingual skills
