Overview
Music Therapist needed for UNC Health Youth Behavioral Health (YBH), in Butner, North Carolina. YBH is a 54-bed, 24-hour, locked psychiatric facility serving children and adolescents with mental health diagnoses, dual diagnosis, substance misuse and complex behaviors. The program operates in a milieu-based, trauma-informed and therapeutic setting with safety as a key component of care. The Music Therapist will work with a large interdisciplinary team including Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, and Nursing Services.
The Music Therapist is accountable for developing and implementing music therapy services to support emotional, mental, and physical well-being. This role will involve direct patient care, professional growth activities, mentorship, and potential involvement as a clinical educator for music therapy students. A flexible team approach is expected to contribute to program development, quality improvement, problem solving and productivity enhancement.
Responsibilities
- Consult with team members to use music to meet individual patient needs. Plan, develop, coordinate and evaluate specialized programs for specific clinical service areas.
- Evaluate patient progress toward treatment goals, adapt interventions as needed, and facilitate techniques for pain management and coping skills development.
- Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance activities in line with JCAHO standards and hospital/department policies. Contribute to design and implementation of research within the department.
- Plan for musical resources and coordinate program scheduling with co-workers and other disciplines. Engage in outreach activities related to the Music Therapy program.
- Plan, create, and conduct individualized music therapy interventions considering patient needs, resources, safety, infection control, and risk management to ensure therapeutic benefit.
- Receive physicians’ orders, assess/evaluate patients, and formulate treatment plans based on assessments, medical history and interdisciplinary evaluations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Music Therapy or related field including an internship.
- Certified Music Therapist by the Board of Music Therapists.
- One (1) year of experience in the field of Music Therapy.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong clinical and interpersonal skills; ability to work within a multidisciplinary team; knowledge of trauma-informed care and hospital-based mental health practices.
